R180 in a 71 dime - stub axles from??
Hey mattc -
I believe I just bought the STi R180 you had on Ebay, no?
So now I'm posed with the same question you are? I've got a '71 510, with an SR20 drivetrain. Currently, it has a R160 LSD in it, and it's working great, but I'll be jacking up the hp from the current 266 whp to about 350 whp, and thus, bought the R180 from you.
I was originally told by Troy that the R180's were a direct swap, just like the R160's, with a direct snub axle exchange, or so I thought he said. Today he tells me that he doesn't know what's involved, so I did the search, and voila, this post.
So, before I get into the swap, I'd like to know exactly what to do with the snub axle situation. Does anyone make an aftermarket snub axle that will fit? A difinitive answer would be great, so I'm not faced with any suprises, come swap day.
TIA,
Terry

The STI R180 requires a 27 spline stub or CV axle input. Nissan used 25 spline for it's R160's & R180's then 29 spline for the R200's. This fact makes it realy hard to find a stub axle that will work unless another manufacturer has a 27 spline stub that is the correct diameter & length (or longer). I've been considering the swap, but have concluded that it is going to require custom CV axles (so I'm saving up).

I have an Idea how to used one set of STi input shafts and one pair of 510 stub axles to make a system that will bolt up to stock half shafts. It would help if some one had a set of each sitting around I could work with. I do the r160 conversions and am pretty sure I can make this work as well.

My Mac (using Safari) does the same thing.
If I had a spare set of stubs & some STI axles I'd let you experiment with them, but I don't. I assume what you have in mind requires a little cutting & welding which is certainly one way of doing this particular conversion, as long as the welds are good.

I found a site that may provide new hope for those wanting to run r180 diffs. Its a 4x4 site that sells the factory clutch pack LSD for Nissan hardbody pickup front r180s. These are factory parts and brand new. They should fit into any r180 housing and use 25 spline input shafts. You could find and old z car r180 for cheap and slap one of these in there for a pretty reasonable total cost. http://www.purenissan.com/r180_lsd1.htm
