MISSION ROAD RACE SEPT 17/18

Post by bertvorgon »

Morning World,

This weekend is another road race event, where both Byron in his 510 and Tracey in her Miata, will be running.

This is an ICSCC Championship event.

I will try to get as many pictures as possible, as Byron's race is spread out between Tracey's..

Tracey qualifies at 9:00 Am with race at 12:45 - 1:10 PM

Byron practice at 10:05 - 10;20
qualify at 11:30 - 11:45
Race 4:25 - 4:50

Mike Gibson will be there also on his 240

All times subject to fluctuation depending on any course issues. Going to be a cool morning so getting heat into the tires will be tough!

Maybe see some of you there, dress warmly.

Pictures and story coming soon.

I shot some video of Byron in his 510, have to figure out how to get that onto my Vimeo account.

Morning World,

Coming to you live from sunny White Rock, where it’s 12C out, with the sun just cracking over the Cascade Mountains this morning.

Super day on Saturday, temperature was just perfect, with a slight breeze.

Tracey was the only one running from the Specialty gang, Byron of course in his 510 and Don Nimi in the Formula Ford.

I stopped at Tim Horton’s to get a box of donuts, where upon arrival under the Specialty canopy, a clarion cry must have gone out to the wasps. Same at lunch break, they attacked with a vengeance upon smelling the food. At least no one got stung!

Tracey was out for qualifying at 9, where she placed 2nd on the starting grid. 1st was Jack Zarowny in his Corvette power Mazda and 3rd was a GT Porsche and 4th was a very fast Dodge Viper and 5th was a Pontiac Tube frame. All, very fast cars.

I wandered down to talk to Byron, who was still sorting issues with the 510. After he came in from Practice we did a plug check, with him running some BPR7ES plugs. The wide band had showed lean on the first number of laps, but, as it turned out, he had let the car idle a long time in pre-grid to warm the oil and with NO heat shield, it really cooked the carb’s. The problem did not present itself on the qualifying run. The plug colour was good but I think I would be running 8’s for a heat range, just to be safe. He is running C-12 race fuel, so that is good.

His car sounding strong and clean down the straight, but, he was fighting really OLD and flexi sidewall tires that came on the car.

In walking back I did note there must have been 30+ BMW’s for their series race, which was a good barn burner towards the end, with the 2nd place guy doing a huge pass to take first place. Nice clean race too, you can tell they have raced together.

When I got back to the Specialty pit, there was a fever of activity in Don’s pit, Andy and Collin had the valve cover off, as the engine did not run well during Don’s practice. The valve train was being checked, as the problem last time was a valve seat had come out. Andy checked the lash on all the valves and they were ok. But, it was noted that the valve cover had a crappy gasket and it had leaked oil down the side of the motor, covering and getting into the distributor. Andy promptly glued a new gasket onto the valve cover and after cap was cleaned the Formula Ford ran just fine.

Getting over to Tracey’s pit I changed the qualifying tires for the race tires and torqued the wheels. I did a double check as that is a hell of a responsibility that always hits me.

Lunch was the usual 5 Star Buffet, other than the unwanted wasps.

I ran down to pre-grid to get some pics and then headed to the bleachers to watch.
The thunder and scream of the engines at the green flag is always too cool. The first turn is a 180 so braking on the charge going in is a heart stopper.

Everyone made it, but, Tracey dropped 2 positions to 4th. The battle raged on for about 2/3 of the race when the Pontiac went out with some mechanical, he was really pushing it. The yellow came out so the cars bunched up behind the pace car as they towed the Pontiac to a safer spot.

As the pack came around Turn 9 onto the straight, we all knew, as did Tracey, that the “Hail Mary” move would be on the restart, to get past the Dodge Viper. The green came out in a flash and away they went, Tracey being on the inside for the race line around that first Turn. Holy Cr*$.....smoke from the tires as she late braked the Viper, keeping the slight edge going around the corner with the Viper to the outside, giving her the edge for the short chute to Turn 2! Jack in the MazVette was gone so he was not an issue, when that Miata is up on full boost, the Viper does not have any advantage of power. Tracey kept the pace up till some traffic messed with the Viper, she had it anyways.

Chequered flag, with Jack 1st and Tracey 2nd.

Byron’s race was not till days end and as I had been up since 4 AM, I trundled off. I did shoot some nice video, but of course the file size is too big to email and this site does not take any, so I will post up on my Vimeo account later.

The drive back was again via ZERO Avenue, no traffic, sunny and peaceful!

VIMEO sure has gotten easier to use, at least for me.

Here are a couple of small clips of Byron in the 510 at Mission raceway.

Those vids are great, sounds like the car is really singing a good time. I lost the tach during the race Saturday, but I know I was pushing 7500 at the end of the front straight in 4th in the warm up session when the tach was working.
Thanks Keith
