72 Ultra Orange - Bucket List Restomod

Post by 72ultraorange »

My first car was an Orange 1972 4-door Datsun 510 — my dad had bought it for $200; engine block was frozen, freeze plugs blown out, 4 flat tires and covered in Pecan tree sap. He got it to the house, we cleaned it up, put white letter tires on it, got it running and put a cherry bomb glass pack on it. It had a black interior and wasn’t long before i got an upgraded stereo and had a pair of Craig Power Play speakers bolted into the rear deck. Many days driving dirt roads and having fun with the 4 speed. Longing for those days again. I am rebuilding my 510 as a street / show car ready with enough safety equipment for occasional track days.

Been looking for a while for a 510 and working on approvals with my “CFO” :) and finally bought one in late 2019 — then pandemic hit…

Got started on it February 2021 — learning from many of those here that have a passion for these cars like me but have substantially more mechanical skills. Over the past several months I have been sourcing parts, restoring some, and buying others.

Still VERY early in build - and have been delayed by rear cross member modification issues — Long way to go but making some progress…

I have spoken with many folks but have to say thanks to those who have helped me get this far with parts and advice!

SR20DET
- engine was partially dismantled and apparently the head has had work done to it…it is literally a bucket of bolts right now… sizing bolts is now a fun exercise :)
- Getting it ready to mock in for the exhaust fabrication
- Turbo Manifold by Future Fabrication
- CXRacing intercooler and radiator — looking for a shroud and electric fan setup - may build this
- Planning on a Mazworx rebuild in 2022
- Debating transmission — but most likely will go with stock 71C — any recommendations — want 400+HP out of this

Impressive project... I like what you are doing with fitting everything first and then disassembling to go back to paint and body work. I was planning to get my shell out for paint, but now thinking maybe I should source some more parts and pre-fit the SR20DET, radiator, etc. before painting.

Thanks Owen, I am really trying to get the paint right on it…not wanting to do major cutting / drilling or using a BFH on it after I get the paint done — i know this will be unavoidable —just wanting to minimize it. Want to get as much of the mechanical / electrical systems mocked in / fitted as possible — including turbo exhaust downpipe/wastegate, water/refrigerant/condenser lines for the AC/Heat, fuel system lines/fuel cell - reviewing complete Radium system with spare tire Fuel Safe System with surge tank or ATL Fuel Cell (TBD), rear seat roll bar, major electrical (wiring harness through firewall and relocated battery box in trunk), Pedal box / Brake/clutch cylinders, and steering linkage work.

Also have a fiberglass body kit to be installed to add some JDM style to this… more on this later.

Mike, thanks for the feedback - i had to go look at the camber adjustment plates again — been months since I put those on (my rear cross member is on the way !!!) The T3 plates have slotted adjustments - here’s a picture, Will do some measurements after I finish the rear suspension. It “appears” to have a decent amount of caster adjustability. Should be “good enough”.

Here are a couple of pictures of my rear brake setup. Don at DPracing setup the bracket with a manual e-brake with same rotors I have on the front. Will be working to get the rear suspension done in a few weeks with the wheels on!

the hardest part is making a cable work.

I've been hoping someone would figure it out..how to use tesla calipers for electric ebrake. that's beyond my electronics capabilities. needs a force feedback system for clamp pressure and release..

Mike. The cables should run through the trailing arms just like OEM. Will check this out and post soon— parts will be here next week to start all of the rear suspension assembly. Cross member goes directly to powder coating first.

Meanwhile — mocking up some engine bay bling … plan to get a badge made by Billetbadges.com to go on this strut tower brace from Garage Theory (www.garagetheory.net/shop/p/datsun-510-strut-brace)

Here’s my preliminary design…

Is your radiator / intercooler setup this one:

If so, any modification required to make it fit and are you happy with the appearance and quality? I realize the real test is a ways off, but thinking of ordering it for my build.
