Need more caster

Post by wrs1 »

Hi guys, long time no post for me.
I am looking for more caster in my 510. I did a search quickly and didn't see anything that useful so forgive me if there is an appropriate post that I didn't see.
My front end is zx struts with GC coil overs and GC camber plates. Ermish adjustable TC rods. Problem is i cant get more than 3 degrees of caster without pushing the wheel into the front fender.
I dont need all the camber articulation though from the camber plates. Has anyone turned the GC camber plates to use as caster adjustment? the holes dont line up but could be re drilled. Not sure if that is safe. However on my 240 i have the DP puck style plates that allow for either camber or caster adjustment and they give me about 5.5 degrees caster without pushing the wheel too far forward with the T3 adjustable rods.
What is the best setup for 510 or any suggestions?
Thanks Bill..

I had my fenders cut to get more caster. I can post a picture later if you want.

Thanks for the suggestion but I dont want to cut the fender.
I will either get some offset plates or turn my ground control plates first and see how much articulation I need.

I got mine done when I was getting the front of the car rebuilt. You don't notice it unless it is beside a stock fender. You should be able to get 4ish with offset camber plates I think.

Stock is 1 degree 50 min. Almost 2 degrees. Is 3 really going to matter?

3 degrees caster is not enough. I need 5 - 6.

I think S13 plates fit a 510. Are there any out there offering caster adjustment?

Im running my T3 plates on the diagonal on stock 510 struts and TC Rods.

Had it aligned in the fall and they were able to get the below camber and caster out of it.

-1.97L and -1.56R Camber
3.41L and 3.82R Caster

I ran just over 6 degrees of castor at the peak of my Solo, really helped plant the front end on turn in, as that castor induced even more negative camber, on turn in.

Yes, it was a bear to steer at slow speeds in the pits but the offset was worth it and for track days, 6 castor gave incredible stability it high speed.

Really try to get even castor, make sure YOU or an equivalent weight is in the drivers seat, 1/2 tank of fuel ( or the car at race weight), basically as you would run it at an event.

Agree with Keith.
Is anyone running the Tilton offset plates and if so what is the max caster you can get with those alone?
I am talking with Don at DP racing but dont want to purchase a set if I cant get enough caster from the plate change alone.
Thanks for the help.
Bill.

i think there is no "rule" and each car can be slightly different-- i fully expect to need to trim my fenders when i pull it to 5.5 or so - i have both offset camber plates from DP and shorter TC rods .. the last 510 we did i moved the flares on the fenders as well to center them on the wheel-

either way the offset plates will be an improvement over what you have now--and i "thought" both sides need to be almost identical or it will wander.. ?

setup depends on the intended use. street driven vehicles usually call for some cross camber / cross caster.....

As an update and conclusion, I installed the Tilton style offset plates from DP and I can easily obtain +5.5 caster. I imagine i can get +6 or more....
