a 300zx engine will fit in easier and much more nicely than a 280z engine.
There are also...L16,L18,L20, LZ22, Z20, Z22,Z24, KA's,Sr's..the list is endless!

I've got one in my 510 bit it is a bit of work. Tranny hump, firewall stuff. Not too crazy though. Goes like stink.

I recommend keeping an L-Series engine. They are lightwieght, and have a lot of power. But they aren't the prettiest engine in the world (They can be lookin' NICE, tho!) but hey, they are easy to work on, and are easily tuned.

I recommend an L20B with a well tuned set of Weber DCOE's. Lots of power, but you'll really hate the mileage. SU's on an L20B would be ideal for the daily driver slash hard street driver. They produce about 90% of the power, and take about half the gas. They are also the carburetors that came stock on the 510 SSS'. They are also quieter in terms of induction noise.

If you want to turbocharge it, no problem. Buy a turbo setup from Top End Performance ( http://www.racetep.com ) and set everything up. Expect to pay, tho.

I suspect a well tuned L20B, slight overbore, with a good cam and tuned carbs, could produce about 140hp, but it all depends on what you do to it. Stroke it, Turbocharge it, EFI it, expect over 180, maybe top the 200hp mark.

Cheers.

Yeah, I hear that the Weber DCOE's with just air horns make about as much noise as a stock carburetor WITHOUT an air filter. I hate it. Not enough power to go with the noise, plus I like my motor quiet.. makes hte exhaust tip more detailed. ;)

I like to keep the competition behind my muffler.
I don't like sucking and blowing.

I just prefer to keep the noise at a minimum, that way when I'm bookin it through 1st and 2nd gears, the cop forty cars back doesn't have to deal with the loudness of such.

:D

Just my opinion, thas' all!!!!
