Re: Headlight fix
It is amazing..that ALL the grounding goes through that relay for the headlights.
I think, as Byron and I were going to change up my headlights, that ultimately a re-wire for the front was destined anyhow, so if it was the headlight switch, that would be an easy fix.
Robyn, would you have the 73' headlight switch? Mine is the illuminated one.

Oh well, let's hope it is not the switch.
My wife says I need to buy EVERYBODY a Mexican dinner to come and diagnose this with me!

Re: Headlight fix
WELL...NOBODY showed up so that offer is off the table.....
So, after doing all that Rob suggested, and, checking power in so many places, it appears that the switch is the issue.
When I get some more time I will peel the seat out and begin the mining operation to get at the switch.
I hope I can repair mine, Andy ran into this with a failed solder joint. If I can Robyn, can I get a switch and relay from you, just to check the relay, and then I have a switch to go back in should mine be done.
I did check continuity from ground on the relay and it appears to be ok, but, as Rob said.....
Fun to drive the car this late in the year, got so many waves and thumbs up I could not believe it.
Other fun thing, I still was running on the fuel from when I gassed up in Lillooet, it only ran out just as I was getting back to my daughters garage. Nice to burn up that pump fuel as I always leave the tank full with Avgas for the winter.

Re: Headlight fix
I will go digging for the bits. the contacts in the switch are easy to gussy up. just dont bend the tabs too far when dissembling the switch or they will fatigue and pink off.

Re: Headlight fix
Thanks Robyn, let me know and I can cruise in one day, going to stay on task and get this fixed, don't want to worry about it into the New Year and spring.

Re: Headlight fix
So we still don't know for sure though? It almost sounded like Rob was buying me dinner for a second there.
I've never had any luck fixing the switches. They will work for a little while then fail again, it's like the contacts get beyond there intended life or something You should try and get a NOS 620 headlight switch, it has the fiber optics like your 510, I bet it could be adapted to work pretty easily.

Re: Headlight fix
I was talking to Rob not to long ago in regards to remaking the engine bay harness, since you could also redo the fuse box. I have a buddy local who builds wiring harnesses for espresso machines, for the quality wire they use it would be a little over $170 his cost just in wire, based off my rough measurements and how I would probably build it. That's not including any terminals, fuse box, tap, bugging Rob to make sure it's done right.... To get all the colors the inital wiring purchase would be minimum $2500.... Kinda takes the fun out of it.bertvorgon wrote: ↑12 Nov 2018 09:25 I think, as Byron and I were going to change up my headlights, that ultimately a re-wire for the front was destined anyhow, so if it was the headlight switch, that would be an easy fix.

Re: Headlight fix
keep in mind that your 73 illuminated light sw is tied to the wiper sw via the fiber optic line to the bulb socket.

Re: Headlight fix
Good point, lets hope mine is fixable. Worst case, I put my knob on the switch so at least it looks correct...want to keep my car stock looking.....
Are you at the yard all day then?
