Z24 510 issue!

Hey guys so I recently pulled a z24 out of a 720 at the junk yard thinking that it would be easy putting right into my 510.

Boy was I wrong haha

Z24 sits a little to high and the oil pan hits the cross member.

Any tips? First project ever

what engine mounts are you using ? did you use the stock L16 oil pan and pickup ?

I think I am the only guy running a z24s you may find info in the 6 inches of rust build thread.

the z24 has lots of grunt and no rpms. she doesn't like any thing above 4500 so tall gears or tall tires, im running 27in tall mud and snow with 3.90s and a 4x4 720 trans with .86 over

You need Z24 engine brckets and a Z series 2wd transmission for that to work properly and the truck oil pan is a front sump. An S110 200sx oil pan is from a car and they had Z series engines... might work.

My Z24 with L20B head "fits", but it takes some work. 1/4" shim between K member and body, engine mounts slotted to the point where oil pan (L16 pan) JUST clears the cross member and 1.25" sway bar. Valve cover fits with a sheet of paper, barely, so I likely have to shave the valve cover a tiny bit to give some wriggle room.

My Z24 doesn't run out of breath until 6500 RPM. Where did I put that dyno sheet...

You can Franken-Motor those blocks like the 2.2 can't you with the L series U67 head?

Yep, you just have to modify the front cover to mate to the L head.

The spacers that Jim talked about above with slotted L16 engine mounts was also used on Dave Doan's Z24 car locally. Heck I even slotted the engine mounts on my Z22....

Should be a cool build, looking forward to it. You'll have fun for sure.

Another thing I forgot to mention, when Dave built his Z2.4 with an L head, he tilted the motor over another 5 degrees to help cl;ear the hood. And it did fit very nicely under the stock hood.

Cool links above Rob, it was fun ice racing against Malcolm, I could hear his car over mine when beside him!

Thanks for the advice guys!

You will also have to lengthen the timing chain if you go with an L head. But if you want power an L head is the best way to go. Basically you are building an L24B

The Z24 head is built for low emissions and by design has little room for improvement. Fitting larger diameter valves and/or higher lift cams will allow valve faces to hit each other. Ports are too low with a sharp bend at the valve seat. The Z24 is a truck engine with stump pulling torque at low RPM and no need to breathe well above 4K. Besides the taller block with more displacement, however, the head does have several excellent factors.

detonation resistant Hemi combustion chambers
Dual spark plugs to shorten the burn time and reduce the timing advance
Cross flow design so hot exhaust ports don't dump heat into intake ports. Lots of room for turbo and inter cooler positioning.
