Noob build
Re: Noob build
Scraping paint is a wonderful time... The car was red, then blue and finally black. The blue painter didn't scuff anything in the door jams and in some spots, like the roof, the black cracks off with a screw driver. So I scraped for a few days to get it all off and followed up with sanding and a bit of body work. The car was pretty straight and not very dented, little spots here and there and just below the license plate.
Realistic goal is to have it epoxy and high build primered by Jan 14.

Re: Noob build
Sanding, sanding, sanding... awesome.
Finally got it 90% done, welded in the fan supports and should be ready to spray epoxy & high build this weekend.

Re: Noob build
Good Going.
i may have missed the explanation, but what are the short pieces of square tubing welded on just below the left headlight mounting?

looking back
I would make that exhaust bump bigger before paint. maybe clamp a piece of wood and work at it gently with a big hole saw. I only say this because my exhaust is just rubbing at idle with the lights on.

Re: Noob build
Good point! I'll revisit it, it has more room than the pic gives it credit and the hangers are all positioned for it, when I ran the car it was ok but obviously now is the time to be 100% sure.RMS wrote:looking back

Re: Noob build
Sad story, but it was in a crash so the drivers side is recessed by 1/2" from the passenger side. There is a gap between the front fender to the top cross bar that tells that tale. As a result, the mounting holes for the lower valance and front fender are also recessed. The square tubes are welded on to help position the lower valance to the front fender as well as correct the front fender bolting locations. For the fenders I would have had to use very long bolts and the valance looked twisted without the correction.Heinrich wrote:Good Going.

It's not perfect, but it's the best I could do without major cutting and re-welding. The front drivers side piece was welded in way back when and since it was a race car before I owned it I didn't think anybody really cared about the body not lining up nicely. It was welded from the front side of the strut tower to where it meets the upper cross bar. The turn signals and headlights will get shims / washers to adjust their gaps.
Re: Noob build
Wheel wells were epoxy primed and then undercoated already.. since I want this to be a daily driver I figured undercoating would be the better choice in the wheel wells. So far the stuff still hasn't cured fully and I sprayed it in November I think, I used it on my 4Runner and it's hard as a rock on it, so in time I think that'll be the same for the 510.RMS wrote:looking good. not painting the wheel wells ?
Re: Noob build
i noticed the work done on the wells. figured it was going to get the paint as well.

Re: Noob build
I might at later once the undercoating has cured, I don't think that it would have bonded properly had I done it now.RMS wrote:i noticed the work done on the wells. figured it was going to get the paint as well.
Re: Noob build
Thank you! On top of that the neighbors haven't reported me yet so it was a great weekend!Heinrich wrote:Hey, if it works, it works.
