WTB R160/R180 clsd
WTB R160/R180 clsd
I need more acceleration for autocross. Anybody got one for sale in a 4.625, or 4.11 or.....?? I have a 3.70 currently. Or what about using the ring and pinion out of a Subie R160 open diff and swapping into the 3.70 lsd??
I've been driving 70's Datsun sedans, wagons, and roadsters almost every day since 1983!

Re: WTB R160/R180 clsd
I have a 70 510 that came with about a 4:56 (Driveshaft turns 4 1/2 times with one rev of wheel} but the rearend growled and when I backed up
and turned sharp, it would clunk and odd noises IS A POSTRACK So I got chance to get a newer posi with 370 gears and is perfect.
I wouldnt put much value on the 456 gear but posi worked great, Have a 240 hp S-2000 engine that turns 9000 rpm so 456 gear was way to low
for me and got rid of 195- 60-13 tires put on 8 inch wide Kumos on 15 wheel still dont slip clutch much or will spin bad. turns 111 mph in 12,61 et
Give me a call probably to expensive to ship unless you are near Brooksville Fl. 352-799-4939

I have an R-160, 4.11 open you can use the ring and pinion from it to swap into your R-169, 3.70 LSD.

Just an update...I used a Legacy 4.44 R160 open diff, my lsd guts and made my own 4.44 lsd. works great.

Re: WTB R160/R180 clsd
What year legacy did you find it from?
Re: WTB R160/R180 clsd
I did a google search, surfed a couple subi sites.
Lots of fluffy info out there' here are some of them;
"The forester XT 5speed is 4.44"
"(sorry it's not more chart-like but this gives year and model 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse, FD and notes)
95-96 US leg 3.545 2.111 1.448 1.088 0.78 3.416 3.9 push clutch
97-99 US OB 3.545 2.111 1.448 1.088 0.871 3.416 4.111 push clutch
99-04? US FOR 3.545 2.111 1.448 1.088 0.78 3.333 4.111 push clutch
AUS Forester 2003X 3.454 2.062 1.448 1.088 0.78 3.333 4.11 1.196 low range
AUS 2004XT 3.454 1.947 1.366 0.972 0.738 3.333 4.44 no low gear
US EA82 85-89 5spd 3.545 1.947 1.366 0.972 0.78 3.416 3.9 1.592 low range
US EA82T 85-89 5spd3.545 2.11 1.448 1.088 0.871 3.416 3.7 1.196 low range"
"I have an 08 outback 2.5xt limited with a 5mt and it is 4.44 final drive (it's also for sale btw). So, there are USDM subies with a manual trans and 4.44 FD."
"And I thought only auto trannys in the US had the 4.44 FD"
"As I understood it, there were two years of the Forester XT's with 5MT's that had a 4.444 final drive." Actualy years were not mentioned...
And I found this link - good list.

Might be a start.

Re: WTB R160/R180 clsd
im looking for the same thing.
i have a local to me "subaru only" junk yard. I told him i wanted an r160/r180 with a CLSD with fairly low hears and he told me he had an 04 forester xt.
as far as i can tell that an r160 vlsd with 4.44s. I don't know how i feel about the vlsd so im still looking for an older one, or like someone mentioned, there were a few years where wrx stis got r180 with clsd, but those are $$$$$$$
dunno if i want to give this subaru only JY another shot though, i figure why not, so long as i pop the cover before handing over $ i should be alright.
