Unfortunately, it is in the middle. I carefully messed with it for quite a while but then I started imagining all the horrible things that could go wrong with my new piece of unobtanium & quit while I was ahead.
I'll consider it to be "perfectly" flawed, just like the rest of the car (and me ); I'm ok with that.
For your powder-coated trim, maybe you can get a piece of powder-coated steel (like some random bracket off something) and get after it with different things like acetone & aircraft stripper to see if it's feasible to strip it without damage.

In regards to the "clakity, clakity" maybe time to adjust valves and also check those little springs we call "mousetrap" springs that keep a modicum of tension on the rocker arm. They have been known to break.
Stock setting is .010" intake and .012" exhaust..HOT. I use a go/no-go set of feeler gauges.
Do a visual that the wipe pattern on the rocker pad is ok, also and check that the lash pad has not been compromised by the rocker tip hitting it in anyway.

I have a set of those and I had no idea it was called "go-no-go"! I truly learn something every day!

Don't feel bad, I got dialed in by my engine builder Andy, when I went to drive my car home from Specialty Engineering. He was beside my drivers door, which was open, as I went to start the car ( cold motor), I pushed in the clutch like I have for my whole life with this car! AAAHHh..he said do NOT do that on a cold motor with NO oil pressure...it puts load on the thrust bearing that is not good when cold. I NEVER though about that. Another thing was to let the motor idle a low revs for a few seconds ( in my case), again to let oil pressure build, which takes TIME on my motor, before I bring it up to warm up revs of 2,000 RPM.

Thanks! I can't wait!! It was a "big" birthday so I guess hubby waffled between diamonds & bumpers. lol!

That makes a lot of sense as the bumpers just wouldn't fit in the stocking, right? :^)

Oh happy day! My new bumpers FINALLY arrived! They were stuck in the Memphis FedEx hub since the 14th due to severe weather, I guess. Anyhow, they're here! They were well packed and even wrapped in blue satin! I can't wait to put them on!
I've got a question, though; are there some sort of front bumper brackets? Since I've never had one, I don't know.
