Robyn asked me to post this up to see if someone can identify what it is.
This little guy was found in the oil pan of his 2L when he was cleaning it up. it is NOT from the chain tensioner or from the block to head oil gallery - those are slightly bigger diameter.

It's the chain oiler from the front of the block.

I'll try to dig up a photo....

Yep! I wonder how long it ran without the oiler! Any unusual wear on the chain?

Those are crazy thick lash pads. 0.25 or better, eh? The cam grind looks like it needs it. Those retainers look like stockers, I'm surprised the lash pads stay in place. Typically you should use ones with a larger turtle neck.

OK good to know, thanks guys. Robyn already had the chain tensioner bolted back on so we could't check that one. I guess that makes three of these little guys in the L engines. Head to block, chain tensioner, tensioner to block

Yeah thats what we were thinking too. I used to run a huge lift cam (M780) and it used to spit out a rocker to the side if I over revved it or missed a shift. :x I could've used some larger retainers back then….

thanks for posting the pics James.

hmm so that little guy is suppose to be in the front of the block above the crank but below the tensioner ? or behind the tensioner body?..... because unlike the 5 L16s I looked at that had an oilier sticking out the front the L20b I just pulled timing cover off looks like this
Image
could the oilier have been discontinued in late castings? could the oilier I found in the pan be from an l16 and that maybe it was wedged in the baffle ?

man.... I just torqued everything up  well its only a timing cover and oil pump gasket. at least i don't have to pull the head...back to the shop

Wow!!! someone hadn't an idea of what they were doing and frankly I'm surprised those pucks don't pop out at idle because that's a lot of left right rockin. Best scenario is they stick out of the retainer a minimum of .010" Looks like you need the tallest Motorsport retainers but first you need to determine what the pads thickness is before knowing which retainers to get. You may want to recheck the cams wipe pattern on the rockers afterwards also. Is that a LZ series block? If so, they don't have the chain oiler and I have seen some L20B blocks also without them. You apparently have one of them after seeing that galley plugged.

from the story's Ive heard "its an old west wood motor". the block was an early l20b with a #1 casting on the side .080 over dished, milled down closed chamber 210 head .040 worth of shims under the towers with the shad bolt 445. I rebuilt a casting #2 block @ .030 over and dropped the 210 head with the 445 on. ran it for 1200 miles until a valve receded and there was no longer any adjustment. besides the shat valve job, under carbonation, the need for 94 and boost and methanol injection and moderate timing. it ran great.

anyone know when the oilier was discontinued ?

I will be running a .030 over #2 casting L20b, uncut U67 with an unknown California cam #25.
couldn't bring my self to pull it apart if it is a block with with the oilier provision will I suffer low oil pressure if not reinstalled? Image

"...will I suffer low oil pressure if not reinstalled"

Robyn - As the tentionaer itself has the jet hole and considering the size of that hole (8 - 10mm?) in the front of the oil galery, if this is the motor missing that chain oiler - and nothing is plugging the hole where the chain olier once was, you will have little to no oil pressure to speak of in the motor.

If this is the suspect motor that the chain oiler camefrom, you'd be very wise to pull the pan and front cover to verify - the gaskets are way cheaper than the motor.... :-/

I can't figure out how it got there unless it was meant to be there. Why would a builder leave a part that doesn't belong to the engine inside the engine?
My old brain says it came loose for whatever reason, and fell.
Time to give up 3 hours and tear it down!!
