Re: It begins with the small stuff...1.6L of fun
This weekend I the gaping hole in my transmission tunnel covered up with some swanky new sheet metal. Next weekend I'm going to see about getting more of the old sound deadening material off and my heater control valve taken out, it is stuck in the full on position and I think it may need replacing. It will probably be a good time to take out the dash and just get it all done.

I got a nice little box today. I think it will look great in the car. Especially when the interior is done.

Re: It begins with the small stuff...1.6L of fun
It's been a while since I last posted. I've done a bunch but don't have many pictures to show for it. I've been enjoying driving her a lot more with the changes I've made.
Installed new sheet metal rear firewall
Tore out nasty old carpet
Added some sound deadening (more on the way)
Installed a weight jacker kit from Troy
Installed a nicer dash pad care of Robyn
Cleaned up wiring behind the dash (still need to clean up the engine bay wiring)
Installed new steering wheel
Installed new Codra cs classic seat (I can't gain any weight if I want to keep fitting in it) Installed stainless steering box brace Installed new thermostat housing upper and lower (turns out there was no gasket....actually there are a lot of gaskets in the cooling system missing)
Spent many hours adjusting suspension
Installed new tail lights Still to do...
install new carpet kit(I think I'll wait till I'm done everything else before I do that)
drive
Install New speedo cable
drive
Install electric water pump with fan/pump controller and fab cover plate from one of the old stock pumps I have sitting around
drive
clean interior floor and put some paint on it
drive
install high volume oil pump
drive
remove and re install distributor correctly(installed 180 out by previous owner)
drive
find some where that will change out the ring and pinion in the subaru CLSD I picked up from 3.70 to 4.11 or maybe lower
Install LSD
Drive
get a better clutch...grrrrr I just put one in but it slips a bit between 2 and 3k. once the RPM's are up it grips great but if I give er the beans in 3rd and up at 2k it seems to slip a bit, not badly but enough

Just acquired a 4.44:1 ring and pinion. I think that will be fun.

That will be fun, but which diff frame size is it for?
I have only seen 4.44:1 gear sets for R190 diffs. R160 and R180's have (among others) 3.90, 4:11, 4.375, 4.625 and for R180 5.13 gear sets.

Re: It begins with the small stuff...1.6L of fun
It is for a R160 Byron. I bought it from a guy in San Antonio. I will see when it gets here but from all the pictures it appears to be 4.44. 40 teeth on the ring and 9 on the pinion. He has sent me pictures of it coming out of the R160 housing.

Re: It begins with the small stuff...1.6L of fun
I have a 4.44 R160 going into my racecar. It came with a VLSD and I swapped in a CLSD from a earlier 3.70 ratio 3rd member.
The earlier CLSD has 10mm ring gear bolts, so the holes needed to be opened for the 11mm 4.44 ring gear bolts. Hoping the 4.44 helps at the upcoming Mount Washington hillclimb. The open 3.70 I used at the last event was terrible.

Re: It begins with the small stuff...1.6L of fun
Big thanks to Robyn for helping me out yesterday. He set my timing for me and adjusted my carb. Turns out everything was way off. She runs much better now. He also noticed that my clutch was not fully engaged. It seems that the throw out bearing is bottoming out so I will need to pull the transmission and change it or shave it down. Has anyone seen this before?

4:44's will be a lot of fun, they will be a HP equalizer in some ways.
I would not change my 4:6's for anything, they just keep everything really snappy!
Do you mean it is not fully releasing? there is an adjustment under the car, and, there is an adjustment under the dash, on the clutch pedal arm.

Re: It begins with the small stuff...1.6L of fun
The clutch fork has no play in it when the clutch is engaged. I have adjusted both ends so that the clutch disengages about 1/2 so it is not a simple adjustment issue. Robyn was telling me that there should be a little bit of play in the clutch fork when the clutch is engaged. Mine is tight as tight can be.bertvorgon wrote:4:44's will be a lot of fun, they will be a HP equalizer in some ways.

Re: It begins with the small stuff...1.6L of fun
Robyn is correct, there should be a little bit of play when the pedal is released. If you have adjusted the rod at the clutch fork to its shortest length, then likely you have the incorrect throw-out bearing sleeve installed behind the clutch - I'll look for the photo here because I know it's been posted in the past.funwithmonkeys wrote:
