Re: Metal L ser. head gasket from Kamerai usa
I was thinking about using that one on my turbo build. Kameari said its only good up to 7psi of boost. So I am still thinking about it.

Cheaper to O ring the block.
The cheapest one is 6 X what I paid for my running 510 back in the day.

If you are serious about your turbo project..."O" ring the block. Zero problems after that, you will never lose a head gasket.
I have put over 13 years on one competition motor, nada gasket problems.

What brand head gasket do you use? I am planning on building an L18 EFI Turbo setup and was going to "O" ring the block and have a custom copper gasket made, but do not know if the copper gasket will be so necessary...
Cheers

I will ask Andy what he used in my motor for you. I should know this stuff...but.....
My motor now is going into it's 11th or 12th year now, with no problems, I just make sure to check the torque regularly.

Jared, what boost level are you building for?

Re: Metal L ser. head gasket from Kamerai usa
I run 16 PSI with 10:1 compression, Avgas for regular driving, and, I would run C-16 for full on race, to cover thermal build up and insurance generally.
I switch to a much colder plug also, if I am going to beat on it/race.... BP9ES plugs..street plugs no good at that boost level, over time.
I have sent an e-mail to Andy to ask what gasket.
Full on, full load I let my A/F drop into the 10's...PERIOD!

Re: Metal L ser. head gasket from Kamerai usa
Morning World,
I have an OEM Nissan composite head gasket in my motor, which truly points out how well "O" ringing gives you the insurance against a blown head gasket.
On my last motor, which did 13 years of full time combat for Solo, Road race and Hillclimb, the gasket was mint when we took the motor apart, no sign of deterioration anywhere. Actually, only issue that we saw was the typical cracking between the two water holes, even the bearings were still in good shape....
Keep'em COOL, use GOOD oil, and don't ask more from the motor than it was designed for......

Re: Metal L ser. head gasket from Kamerai usa
Keith,
That is pretty impressive to say the least!
I was at least expecting some sort of metal gasket, but hey, if it works, it works eh?
If I go by what you say regarding not expecting more from the motor than what it was designed for, 16psi will not be a problem for the L18 block given proper fuel is supplied and everything is kept as cool as possible?
Thanks for getting back to us regarding what gasket you use in your motor, much appreciated!

Re: Metal L ser. head gasket from Kamerai usa
Lets just say that Andy builds good stuff..and I kept my hand away from the boost controller......
When I ran my 1800, before I went to MOD class, I ran the same sort of boost, with a really small turbine housing, crazy response ( had to to compete) and I always ran good fuel. That is the key in so many ways..just NEVER detonation. Forged pistons sure are good also, as no matter what the thermal load goes up over time, so you need a strong pistons. I used stock rods up until the current motor.
Thinks about some sort of boost retard on the ignition also, I knock mine back to 24-26 total under full boost. Don't forget a colder plug, at least one heat range depending on how LONG you will be caning on it. I go two heat ranges from my "street" plug, to my "race" plug. NGK's have a good range in any one anyhow, so you do have some latitude.
Yikes...I just looked at the price of that head gasket...is that a one shot deal?
