L20b to L16

Post by screamer510 »

What is involved in going from a L20 to an L16? I know it sounds backwards. The L20 has dual SUs and is hooked to a dogleg 5 speed. The L16 has an original Hitachi.
Is it just the exhaust interference?
Just weighing my options.
Also, who has a general estimate to install new valve seats in a L series head or is it something I can do myself at home?
Thanks,
Dan

An L20B exhaust won't interfere with installation in a 510 - typically - but it will hang ~3/4" lower owing to the lower height of the cylinder head.

If your L20B head is a square port head, there shouldn't be any major issues.

If you're asking about installation of valve seats, it's not something you can do yourself. Specialized equipment and experience are needed. Best to find recommendations for a shop in your area and ask them direct.

If the L16 has a flywheel and clutch/pressure plate assy on it then the dogleg will just bolt up an run. Providing...

That the L20B was using a 200mm clutch/pressure plate. If it was running a 225mm from a truck then you will need to get a proper release bearing collar that matches the 200mm clutch on the L16.

The L20B has an L16/18 exhaust manifold on it now. This manifold will bolt perfectly to the L16. If it has an L20B manifold with a single large output pipe the L16 manifold won't match up to the down pipe.

Su's will more than likely work on the L-16 as well, depending on what has been done to them....

You need the L-16 oil pan and pick up from what I understand. Exhaust will be too short more than likely as L-20 block is 3/4" higher.

So I still have my L-16 so I can just use the oil Pan from that? It doesn't interfere with how much oil goes through the motor? And the exhaust isn't an issue I already planned for that.
