The 510 Realm

It's been brought to my attention that the gear oil for the sedan is GL-5 while the wagon H-190 is GL-4 same as the transmission. Can anyone confirm this from a Nissan FSM or factory statement. Something official and not from a Haynes or Chiltons. Does it say GL-4???

My 1973 Nissan 1600 manual seems to reference the sedan only, gl4 in the tranny and steering, gl5 in the diff. Perhaps someone else has the wagon one?

The 1972 FSM shows GL-5 for both. There is an extra note for the wagon diff carrier to use SAE MP 140 gear oil when temp is over 32 degrees C (90F)

Did all the wagon diff come with the aluminum carrier?

GL-4 is usually used in the transmission and contains less sulphur anti scuff additives to protect the brass synchros. Usually GL-5 is used in the rear ends only and needs these additives. I'll wait and see if anyone else has heard of the GL-4 in the diff.

On page PD-19 of my 1972 FSM it lists the info I posted above. It also notes the that the carrier is made of a light and strong alloy of aluminum.
In the General Info section on page GI-12 it notes GL-4 for the T/M Gear Oil and GL-5 for the Diff Gear Oil.

OK here's why I ask. GL-4 is recomended for transmissions that have 'yellow metal' of copper/bronze synchros. Perhaps an earlier goon H-190 had brass in it so I checked.

Looks like there may be some bronze or copper in it. I believe it's a thrust washer on the pinion gears. I have always recommended GL-5 for Nissan rear ends and this may be wrong. What do you think?

I'm not sure on the oil suggestions, but yes all PL510 H190 wagon diffs had the aluminum carrier 68-72.

So did the 520/521 and early 620.

Well I checked some part numbers and the goon thrust washers were used on all H-190 after the 521 and also includes the Roadster. So I don't know. Maybe false info.
