Roll cages

Post by Byron510 »

So I’ve foolishly taken on another side project – but it’s kind of interesting. Spent four hours on it tonight.
It’s a 1967 MGB, but not any MGB. It was an actual works race car, fully documented. It ran its first event at Sebring in 1967, and has been a race car the rest of its life. The current owner bought car in pretty used up, but complete condition. Over the years it had seen a few bumps and bangs, so I’m told a few panels were replaced. The photos don’t do the color any justice, but it should be a nice car when completed. It’s likely the most valuable car I’ve worked on – the owner told me it was worth north of $250K. I just wish people would bring me the car for cage work BEFORE they paint the damn thing! Makes me way to nervous.
Anyways this will be a simple 4 point, with a diagonal and a seat belt bar- pretty strait forward. I have lots of photos of the car in its original form, so I’ve been asked to copy this as best I can.

Speaking of originality – check out the light on the roof. It’s a pit light. I guess this is what was done in night racing in the time before radios. When I look in the old photos, sure enough it’s there!

Did they use a 6 cylinder for racing?

I really don't think theres room under the hood for a strait 6, I'm pretty sure they were all fours.

'67 BGT = 1800 4cyl. ,95hp stock.
Spitfire coupe was called a GT6, and had a 2L 6-cylinder, also 95hp, but still one of my favorite brit cars, and they're cheap. A GT6 was on my short list when I was planning the project that became my 510 ( I had a '73 1500 Spit when I was younger.) I especially like the one-piece flip forward bonnett, I wish I had that on my 510. Anything's possible I guess. Maybe I'll also swap to knock-off wire wheels?

Cool project Byron, I'm sure you'll make it nice.

Yeah, I drove a 6 cylinder Spitfire back in the late 60's (belonged to a girlfriend) and saw a few 6 cylinder MGC GTs as well. Seems like they had a big bump in the hood to clear the front on the engine.

I finished off the MGB today (day off of work, so why not!). I do still have to come up with a seat rail/mount for the 60's BMC factory racing seat, still kicking some period correct ideas around that will pass tech today. The owner asked me to add on the seat belt guide behind his seat, so that was the last touch of the day. I actually made two roll bars; he has another one on the 'someday' list.
This is good that it's leaving because now I can get onto the memorial car project!
