Big Brake Upgrades?

Post by Cazzzidy »

Hey guys,

I have pretty much my entire restofication project nailed down now. I have my motor, my glass panels, my ground control suspension, and I know what I want to use for my rear end, interior, etc....

But brakes ... I have really no idea what I want to run for brakes on this thing. I have spoke with a couple shops that can do sweet custom systems for between $1000 and $1800.

Thats a little too much though...

What are some good bolt on front brake upgrades that can contain 200+HP in Auto X events?

Autocross events are all that demanding for braking performance. But nonetheless...
What front struts are you running? If you have ground control camber plates etc you could run 280zx struts (and thus brakes).

Rear brakes could also be 280zx discs with a custom caliper mount.

A few people have put 300zx brakes on but the details are sketchy...I don't know them at least.

Then there is wilwood...

i think i'll be doing 280zx brakes. but i heard the 280zx turbo has better brakes than the nonturbo. that true? cuz i have a non turbo lined up.

I got brakes from teh turbo.
I think the only difference is the rear rotors are slighlty larger in diameter.

What do you guys think of this setup? I am pretty sure this is what I am going to do...

The only problem I can see is that I am running ground control front struts, which I believe are stock 510 size replacement. This one is designed for a 280ZX front strut swap...

Can any one give me some insight into the differences between a stock 510/ground control strut and a 280ZX strut?

Thanks, Cassidy

among other things, the inclination angle is different - 280zx is about 12 degrees, 510 is 8 or 10 degrees...

I think the main advantage of using the 280zx struts is for the larger brakes...so if you're getting custom wilwoods etc you mights as well base that on 510 struts.

Thanks Rob, though I am not sure how that affects the brake setup...

And 5teN, this is not a custom project, it is a highly tested and popular brake kit for 510 owners with 280ZX coil overs. I do not have the patience/skill/machinery to custom fab my own custom brake kit, so I need someone else to do the hard stuff for me.

This is my guess, and mabye someone can confirm it, but I believe that I could bolt up this brake kit to my ground control front struts if I had a spindle and hub from a 280ZX. What do you guys think?

Mabye I should call up GC?

And lastly, what about rear brakes?

I am thinking of either the light, race proven aluminum drums from a 300ZX or rear discs from an early 80s 200SX. Any other Nissan swaps I should look into?
