Timing cover

Post by russaroll »

Ran into a bit of a problem today. I was trying to get my engine back together and, wouldn't you know it, I seem to have the wrong timing cover. As you can see it IS for an L20B. Anyone have the one I need, with the bolt holes farther apart? I will trade you or buy if I have to.

In looking at your posts - I think you have an L20b - which is what I think you are saying in this post (It IS for an l20b!), If you could verify this - for the confused like me, I think it will be useful.

Someone will have this.....

I was also confused. That cover is not a l20b one. I'd guess it's a z20/z22 cover. The l20b cover is getting harder to find. Good luck.

I believe the timing cover you have is for the early 80's NAPZ Z20, cuz the upper bolt hole spacing is the same as the L20B...........the cylinder head mounting points changed with the NAPZ cylinder head! Pretty sure the Z22 upper bolt spacing was a little wider & the Z24 was way wider.........they kept raising the block deck, thus spreading those bolts further apart! I wish I could help with an L20B, but like I said, they are getting harder to find!

You need to clarify to a seller, what you mean by "bolt holes further apart" (see what I wrote above). Bottom line, you need a 1975-1980 L20B timing cover. Period. Ugh I hate to see when a seller sells the wrong part!! :x

The Z24 is 2cm (about 3/4") taller than the L20B, Z20/22. Does this look like about 2cm different?

Mike his issue is that the top of his timing cover, where it meets the cyl head, tells me that he got a Z20 timing cover for his L series.

But yes, I agree that the Z20 top bolt spacing is the same as the L20B (same block deck height).......your first pic. I also agree that your second pic is for the even taller deck Z24. I think the Z22 would be the same as the L20B/Z20, but not 100% sure...............I think they raised the block deck again, with the Z24........??

Yes he has a Z20 or Z22 timing cover. The Z24 is 2cm taler.

I fit an L head over a Z series timing cover and it seals, though you can't use the 10mm bolts into the timing cover. It's a bit thin in one spot so I added a little JB weld to the head and filed it down flat. The front head to timing cover area only seals in fumes and oil spray so in lieu of the missing bolts I smeared a very small amount of RTV on the top and bottom of the two sides and the front of the gasket to forestall any leaks. This was a Z24 block with L head so used a Z24 89mm cylinder gasket.
