Looking to upgrade 510 distributor

Post by 510RICHIE »

I found a distributor “matchbox” for the 72 510 l16

Just checking if it will work before I buy it.

It’s a serial #D4K80-01 OYO4
22100 H9501

Thanks for the help

That number is for an A-Series engine. Not sure if that will work. Maybe if you swap the mounting pedestal? I don't know. I'm sure someone else on here knows...

Used on the later B310 (210) and the FWD N10 (310) A picture should show a drive gear on the bottom held by a roll pin that has to be removed and replaced by a collar from an L series distributor.

Ok thanks so much.

Can I swap the vacuum advance also since the d4k has two ports and the d412 has one port?

Unfortunately, while many parts like the breaker plates and the vaccuum advance chambers can be interchanged on the L4, L6 and A Motor Matchbox distributors, the center drive shafts are different.

The A motor matchbox center shafts have a gear held on by the roll pin that is driven by another gear on the camshaft.
The bottom of this A motor shaft is flat.

The L4 and L6 matchbox center shafts have an offset slot that is driven by the long oil pump driveshaft.

I have overhauled many of these Matchboxes.
I wish it was true that the A motor ones could be used just by swapping the lower drives.
It would make many more available for the L4's that are very much in demand.
If you are going to be at Powerland in about 10 days I'll be there and show you what I'm talking about.
I will have a number of overhauled matchboxes for Sale.
L4, L6 and A Motors.
Overhauled Breaker plates, new vaccuum chambers, factory nissan matchbox units, new cap and rotor, with brackets and mounting pedestals.
Complete with Factory coils and custom wiring harnesses.
Pricy but very cherry. Come and see for yourself.

Good luck in your search. These are getting very hard to find.
Even the parts are almost impossible to find.

In the US the '80 A10 (HL51))and S110 (200sx) had Z20S engines that had basically an L series matchbox distributor. California models were 8 plug and for '81 all were 8 plug. In Canada the L20B was retained through '80 and switched to Z20 in '81 and it was an 8 plug distributor. I've had two '80 S110 matchbox distributors I saved from the crusher and sold.

You could get the later '81 and up A10, S110 and 720 truck distributor and simply use only 4 of the plugs and leave the others unused. It normally uses two outputs to two coils but will still work if only one is used. Yes, it may look a little weird with only half the wires on but cheap and available. You would need a '78 and up 1 ohm EI coil as the points coils will over heat.
