Newbie intro. Purchased historic 510 race car.

Post by DaveCarGuy »

Hi All !

I have lurked around here for quite some time, and have really enjoyed and appreciated much of the information and discussion. My first car was a 1972 Datsun 510 that I purchased back in 1978. I always dreamed of racing one back then, and I’m finally getting around to it. I recently purchased this BRE replica that has been racing SCCA and other organizations since 1979. Hello, my name is DaveCarGuy, I'm from Danville, California, and I’m a Datsu-holic.

Welcome to the site...and as maybe you have seen...LOTS of Datsu-Holics here!

Good site and very good knowledgeable people here, in all aspects of our 510's, mild to wild.

That is a nice car!

Please put in your location so we know what part of the country you are in.

Welcome!

I see mentioned being in CA. Also interested in how you found/acquired the car. I have been watching 510 race car sale ads regularly and never saw this one posted anywhere.

Planning for Vintage racing?

Thanks!

This car was never advertised. I discovered this one and another at Thunderhill raceway when they were pointed out to me in a storage garage during a track day event. The owner was focusing on racing his vintage Corvettes and he had two BRE replicas with SCCA log books back to the early 1970's. After I bought this one, my friend bought the other one from the same guy. He may have advertised these ass a pair at some point in a vintage racing mag. It has all the right bits and parts (50MM Solex/Mikunis, BRE manifold, Nissan MoSport 5-speed direct drive, LSD, etc). The prior owner is a guy named Dan Haney, who has had the car since at least 2004. the car appears on an old T Shirt from a 2008 Vintage race (Dan Haney's name on the rear quarter window)

As for historic racing, I'm planning to run all the CSRG events this year, plus the Sonoma Speed Festival in September. Troy Ermish has been updating the car for me and my friend and we will use him for some track support this year. Great guy. We even decided to recreate an old BRE photo...

BTW, if you care to read more, I wrote a blog post about getting this car and preparing it for the race season:

Nice! Thanks for the extra info.

I am very disappointed you didn't make Troy wear a scarf for authenticity.

I have been watching Steve's videos (neue klasse guy) from many of your events. Nice you guys swapped video and he was able to put in some of your footage to show a few of your close battles. A couple of those races you were able to keep on him and get by near the end when he made a slight mistake.

Fun times!
