L20b installation question

Post by Jerry »

Gentlemen, I'm doing an L20b engine swap in a 1971 510 wagon. I'm looking for an oil pan and oil pickup from L16 engine. Hopefully this will solve my hood clearance problem.

Also the original Nissan rubber motor mounts are the ones you want. The aftermarket are much taller. Maybe someone has installed aftermarket ones. They are available from Nissan. Google will find you some or a part number. Also I slot the mount where they bolt to the block. Mostly on the pass side to tilt the engine a bit more.

Did you locate an oil pan? If not, I should have one.

MikeY is correct............the aftermarket rubber mounts are thicker, thus move the engine up. I will have good USED mounts.

You can also slot the engine mount brackets at the block, to drop the engine a tad, but watch for steering center link clearance!

What valve cover are you using? The early 1968-1969 had "fins", that stood proud above the forward hump, thus approximately 1/8-1/4 talle than the 1970-1980 valve covers. I will also have a 1970-1973 "DATSUN OHC" valve cover without the ribs.

PM if interested in anything!

you could use hood spacers. that's what i did in my old wagon. also helps with cooling, supposedly.

I had similar issues with the L20 installation. The valve cover would hit the hood. I then discovered the L20 engine mounts are taller than the L16 engine mounts. So, I used L16 mounts and the valve cover doesn't hit the hood.

You mean the engine brackets or the rubber isolators?

I just installed one , I slotted the mounts 12mm each side and adjusted to about 8mm and 10mm respectively and used OEM isolators (still available at the dealership) and have no clearance issues
