Color Code Confusion

Post by zKars »

I recently acquired an all original 69 510 4 Dr.

The color code markings don’t match. The sticker on the rad support says 818, but the stamp on the rad support says 817.

Quick search suggests 817 is Houston Yellow, 818 is green, which the car is. No chance it was repainted. It’s green in every nock and cranny. The 818 on the sticker isn’t exactly perfectly clear but that last digit is not a 7 for sure.

Anyone experience similar mis-matches?

Just a little something to get the brain working this morning.

Well, apparently Shelby "altered" colors all the time!! I only learned about the STAMPING on the rad core support, relatively recently, so have not crossreferenced at all to verify! I've got a 1969 2dr..............will look at this!
1973 510 2dr
1972 521 flat bed
1972 510 Wagon parts car
2009 Toyota Matrix S AWD

LOTS of 510 parts!

Radiator support replaced at some point in its long life or a miss-stamp at the factory would be my conclusion.

Rad support is original. It has the remains of the bends and folds on the left front corner received upon gently encountering a tree in 1980, that took it out of service until I purchased it recently. I’ve tried to remove and re-apply that sticker previously, and there is no way it can be done flawlessly without some magic. I may end up replacing the rad support to fix the bent mess but will try to retain top of the suppoort with the sticker and stamp.

Mis-stamp is the best explanation so far. I know we will never know for sure, but fun to speculate.

I have not seen this, but I'm still a noob to the Datsun world. I did have a hell of a time trying to find ANY color, let alone the correct color for my car. Many places don't even show the color code matching anything. Others have it as a completely different color. And then others name it something different. As far as I'm aware, the name of the color on my 72 4dr is Sahara Gold. One source even misspells "Sahara". Color code is 938.
