Re: Valve Train
At least you know now, better it happened here than on one of our drives, 400 miles from home. Sorry that happened though.
Good time to go through that whole head I would say.

Re: Valve Train
Can anyone tell me a bit about valve seats? It appears our seats are Bronze. Is this stock? Should the replacements be Bronze or is there something better?

Re: Valve Train
Bronze is original or someone didn't know any better and replaced old seats with original old seats. Steel seats are now used because of no lead in gas which is why your valve seat failed as it got pounded out of shape (soft brass) and lost it's press fit.

Re: Valve Train
Stellite is the trade name for the alloy most commonly used on quality newer seats. Your exhaust seats are likely cast iron, I’d have these changed at the same time to stellite as well.
If it’s a U67 head, I’d upgrade the intake valves from the stock 42mm to the 280z 44mm, and the exhaust 34mm to the 280z 35mm valves and have the seats matched if you want a little more breathing from the head. If you’re replacing them anyways, the costs is the same.
Just a thought.

Re: Valve Train
Thanks for the info. It is actually an A87 head, which I thought I read might be a bit better suited to the 2.2 liter block.
Re: Valve Train
Any head built prior to 1978 I believe had the Bronze intake & cast iron exhaust seats, so that makes sense.
