Re: 6 inches of Rust
well the flaring of the passenger side did not go as smooth. it seams I neglected to add a drain hole at the back of the rocker allowing dirt and water to collect rotting out the rocker end and the inner rocker @ the sub frame pin box. thankfully the box tube in the rocker was suitable sub strait, eliminating the need to cut the quarter and separate the seat base pinch weld @ the inner rocker.
pin box bent out of 11g
loose xmember aided in placement now lets hope she still drives strait

Looks AWESOME - love the flared flare, functional and stylish! I have the D-slots loaded up tonight so I'll be there tomorrow. The tires on the rims are 215/60 so....... got a tire machine in the yard yet??

Re: 6 inches of Rust
thanks Man ! .... and if it wasn't for that pin box... I would have completed the flares well under the 24 to 32 hours a side, as described in the Datsun bible.
seamed up the flares last night
cant wait to mock up some 7in Ds ....but no..... no tire machine

Re: 6 inches of Rust
Big thanks to the James for the rocker.
a peek at the box tube in the rocker
custom rear pan for the hitch and safety chains
......can I paint yet ? that last 10% is a killer
the other day I felt like Butters
supporting glasses a respirator and a full face shield I still managed to get a chunk of molten metal in the eye. I tried to pull it out with a rare earth magnet to no avail. I went to an optometrist, after scraping the big chunk out of my eye with a needle . I was sent to a specialist who used a micro die grinder (that sounded like a dentist drill) to smooth out the edges and remove the remaining datsun from my eye. for those who hate the dentist you know the sound of the drill... now imagine that drill is in your eye.... ya good times... specially when my eye started to move from the chattering bit...oh and the sound of an eye being ground ... nothing like it.

Oh No! Scary shit right there. High speed driving (and riding) would really suck in 2D! All the best to you Robyn and hopefully a speedy recovery.
We should all take this to heart and invest in good eye and face protection - if you haven't already. At work I wear both safety glasses and face shield but in my workshop its only safety glasses. Not good! My face shield kinda sucks........gonna fix that real soon like.

Re: 6 inches of Rust
A quick question with how the wheel well/tub fastens to the quarter panel. I noticed you welded your new raised wheel well, but is the stock setup also welded to the quarter panel?RMS wrote:
I'm looking to potentially raise my rear arch (very little flare - as OEM as possible), but I'm not sure how the revised wheel well/tub interacts with the quarter panel. Is it seam sealed & somewhat floating, or welded?
I was reading another flared 510 project on Ratsun and I recall some comments about never welding the wheel well / tub to an exterior panel because it will show under the paint or something...
Hope your eye is healing well - your story is a good reminder to proper eye protection (ie: full face mask rather than prescription glasses).

Re: 6 inches of Rust
it buffed out beautifully (lol) , no noticeable loss in vision. Goggles are a must! I was wearing glasses and a full face shield and still got something in my eye
the 1/4 is attached to the arch with spot welds at the wheel opening. to get more width beyond a rolled lip you got to go pretty high.
I dont see the 1/4 acting much different with a bead vs spot welds @ the opening. making a clean transition from 1/4 to flare with out a ridge is a bit tricky. I left a 1/16th inch or so gap and under cut with a crescent moon dip of the wand. this reduced the amount of grinding and potential to burn through of the flare while grinding the transition. a small swipe of filler is all it should need... only with paint will the full story be known

Re: 240z grab handle
alright folks here we go a 240z interior door pull mounted in the forward grab handle provisions along the roof line on the 69 datsun 510
as you can see the 240 door pull is a little longer than needed... but even I can easily wrap my meaty ham hock around the handle without rubbing grease on the headliner

Re: 6 inches of Rust
Matt is going to be away in Japan for 10 days so I will be pulling a grab handle off the Tracker to see if it would work.
Will the 69' position be the same in the later years?
