2014 - The year of another Datsun 510 Championship?

Post by Dave Patten »

Is 2014 the year for a Datsun 510 to win another SCCA National Championship?

I'm not sure if many of you have been following Troy Ermish's 510 SCCA GTL efforts. Troy has been racing the car in SCCA's west coast Majors Series this season to qualify for a chance at the National Championship at the Runoffs. The SCCA Runoffs event crowns a National Champion for each of the club's classes in a winner take all one race format. The Runoffs in 2014 will be at Laguna Seca.

In April Troy scored two (2) 1st place finishes at Buttonwillow and lowered the track record by .4 second doing it. Dropping a track record is no small feat, but with the continued reduction of restrictor sizes on all the larger GTL engines doing it today is certainly a major accomplishment.

Troy raced this past weekend in Portland, OR. Early in race one he spun off in the rain getting stuck in the gravel trap ending any hopes of a decent finish. In race two with a growing 20 second lead over second place, the transmission locked in 4th. Troy managed to finish out the race with a spot on the podium in 3rd. The event results in Portland assured him an invitation to the Runoffs in September.

When I spoke with him earlier this week while heading home from Portland, I told him it would be great to see a 510 on the podium at the Runoffs again.

Very cool! Been seeing his pictures on facebook. Guy recently got married as well. Good year :)

I'm not super familiar with the rulesets in the higher levels of SCCA racing. What's still 510 in that car?

Have you looked at other gt lite cars. Then you would understand that this its one well represented 510. I've seen some pretty hacked up Honda's and Vw's in that class. I'm so happy that someone is gonna contend, if not win that national title in 510. I was so disappointed when they did away with the gprod class. I think we finally have someone that has the know how, ability, funds and true racer spirit to win the nationals. The only thing that may be a issue is reliability. Other than that. I think he'll win. I wish he lived here in the Midwest. He would love Mid-Ohio. And to have our runoffs back. I truly miss them. And you guys out west are so lucky to have someone like Troy. What a talent. Here's to ya. As I lift my favorite cold beverage in joyous celebration to triumphant return to the national ranks. :)

Does anyone know if the 510 is racing on Saturday or Sunday??? ... or what class would Troy's 510 be in? ... The Mazda Laguna Seca website has a list of groups, and times, for all 3 days (but no obvious classs the 510 is in)
