Vented Rear Rotors?

Post by Dave Patten »

Question.

Does anyone know of a vented rotor that will slip onto the 510 IRS rear axle? I know the 200SX solid rotor fits, but I am looking for a vented rotor so I can use the Wilwood Combination P-Brake Caliper. It needs a .810" or 1.000" thick rotor.

Does the 5 lug 300ZX vented rear fit? They would need the stud holes drilled for 4x114.3, but will the ID fit over the axle flange.

I looked into front rotors for Altimas and Sentras, but the ID is too small.

Wilwood Caliper (added, wasn't showing earlier)

Z32 rear will fit over, Not sure about the vented z31 rear rotors. They are similarly sized but the z32 rotor has a higher offset due to the internal drum ebrake.

I can check on the z31 rotors when I get home (1 week) and let you know about those.

Specs are listed in my rotor thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=24731&hilit=rotor

Could you run a Wilwood rotor? Any of their rotors will work with a fabricated hat. I don't have a source for hats but am working on a set.

Using a Wilwood Rotor on a hat is certainly an option, but I'd rather find a common replacement rotor to use.

That said I did a quick measurement and the rough OD of the 510 axle flange is 5 7/8” (149mm). From the Brembo online catalog the 87-89 300ZX rotor (Nissan P/N 43206-24P01) has an ID of 154mm so that will clear and it shares the same hub register diameter as the 510 (68mm), also a good thing.

So given the above, the vented Z31 rear rotor should slip nicely over the 510 axle flange and sit tihghtly on the 510 rear hub register to keep it centered. The only mod to the rotor would be drilling the stud holes for 4x114.3, which shouldn’t be a big deal as the hub register centers the rotor not the studs or the axle flange diameter.

The next step is to see if the 300ZX hat height creates any caliper mounting bracket design hurdles. The centerline of the rotor sits 40.5mm inboard of the flange face. The Wilwood combo caliper mounting holes are axial, 26.9mm inboard of the rotor centerline.

Next dimension needing to be measured is the flange face to trailing arm mount surface distance. And then designing the mount.

Any updates on this one? Any luck finding a rotor to use?

I have a pair of vented Z31 rear rotors on the way. I'll let folks know how they fit when they arrive and I get the 4x114.3 bolt pattern drilled in them.

We got our set of 87-89 300ZX Turbo rear rotors and re-drilled them for 4x114.3 bolt pattern. One of the holes for the 4 lug pattern is indexed off of one of the original 5 x 114.3 pattern stud holes in the rotor. Three (3) additional holes were drilled to create the needed 4 x 114.3 pattern.

The 300ZX rotors have the same center bore diameter as the 510 stub axle so the rotor is held centered on the axle same as the drum was. The ID on the 300ZX rotor is just large enough to clear the 510 stub axle so the only modification to the rotor is the bolt pattern.
