Little Orange Jellybean
Got this Wagon last April. It was the typical bastard child that was haphazardly abused with ill intentions. As I tore into it to try to get it running all I found was problem after problem with loose parts, cut wires, the worst paint and body work I have ever seen. It was taken to a local "PRO" Nissan repair specialist and the work performed there was beyond pitiful.
So now it made its way home to my house. It came with many new parts, some I installed ad some I sold. Took the troublesome side draft off and replaced it with a 32/36DGEV. This made a huge difference and I could finally get it started. The throw out bearing squealed like a pig but with time has gotten quiet. I spliced one new tail light, new coil wires and removed added grounds to the under hood and dash wires and replaced the wiper motor that was rewired most likely because the wiper arm mechanism had seized and was probably blowing fuses because of the added drag.
I purchased a 69 Wagon that became a donor for all its NOS parts and soon to be 2.0 L motor with 2.2 internals. Since this Wagon was owned by a Nissan mechanic he had access to the parts through his dealership parts dept. All theses parts have been installed on the Orange Jellybean.
NOS parts
-Wagon rear bumper
-Hatch handle
-Inner and outer rear hatch weatherstripping
-Front and rear sill plates
-Front windshield weatherstrip
-complete grill surround, eyebrow chrome, hood chrome, lower chrome strip
-DATSUN1600 front fender emblems
-Drip rail chrome

Re: Orange Jellybean
Started cleaning up by completely washing the interior getting all the accumulated dirt and junk out. Everything was removed door panels seats carpet some dash bits. Completely cleaned and repaired pieces before putting them back in. The car came with an aftermarket carpet kit so I installed the rear cargo area. I bought some factory rubber mats off a forum member and made a custom trans hump carpet cover . I located a factory rear passenger carpet from a donor car and installed it. I straightened any dents in the metal strips that hold the upper door panels on , had a friend bead blast them and I repainted them silver. Replace most of the dash plastic with better pieces I had accumulated. Washed the crusty seat belts and reinstalled the works.

Next I got to tidying up the mess in the engine compartment. Repainted some parts, fixed the cut wiring, installed the new carb and cleaned the compartment and put everything back in its place. This photo shows a Hitachi carb but a Weber was later installed.

Re: Orange Jellybean
The body is very good condition... There is rust mid way up and at the back of the p/s rocker panel and at the rear of the d/s panel and on the exterior metal inside the p/s front wheel well where the front bumper bolts up. This is the only rust on the car. It is a real crime that someone would go to the trouble "the p/o paid for this work" to do this to a car. The paint is literally falling off and I actually wonder how much if any of the car was scuffed for paint. To top it off it was painted a bad shade of orange.

Re: Orange Jellybean
Moved on to installing the new wheels and tires that came with the car. I had to do a bit of searching because the hole that the lug nuts fit into are so small that a regular socket would not fit. I managed to locate some off ebay and all is well.

Re: Orange Jellybean
Off to my brothers shop for the winter to store it inside and to also work on it from time to time. It had a noisy rear wheel bearing so I did the R&R on those and installed new gear oil and at the same time installed the front and rear roll bars along with new TC bushings.

Re: Orange Jellybean
Recent work has been fitting the FUTOFAB chin spoiler. This is a well fitting piece but as I always do improve things by adding an additional layer of fiberglass to the mounting surface. I drilled 9 holes to mount it. It was so strong I was able to grab hold of the cooling ducts and support my body weight with my feet off the ground. On the ends where it touches the fenders I took some Bondo and added a gob before I installed it. As it squished out it filled the air gap and made a tight fit. Took it off and trimmed and shaped where needed. I need to fill the seams inside the air ducts then its off for prime and paint. I used aviation Clecos to hold the spoiler in place. These are invaluable because I had it on and off at least 20 times to fit and trim.

Re: Orange Jellybean
I completely rebuilt the grill. I drilled out all the tiny rivets and bead blasted all the parts to to be repainted black and bought a polishing wheel and compound from Princess Auto and polished up the stainless steel bars. I simply used short 1/8" steel rivets to put it all back together. On the rivets that are visible I added a drop of JB-Weld to the head, let them dry and painted the works. The rivets no longer have a visible hole but are rounded and blend into the grill. I also removed all the paint from the headlight bezels and repainted all the black inserts.

Re: Orange Jellybean
Terry, tremendous work on this whole project. Thanks especially for explaining how you did the grille. You had posted pics of it once before, I think, but the commentary on it here will make it much easier for the rest of us to follow suit. Great work!

Re: Little Orange Jellybean
Today I got the restored grill and headlight surrounds installed along with new carpeting along and below the aluminum sill plates. Interior is finished except for some missing factory radio knobs.

Re: Little Orange Jellybean
Really nice work Terry, looking like a super sweet d.d..... even my wife said "it's really cute" as she walked by holding our one month old. She must be feeling particularly fuzzy and maternal as cars are not really her thing. I told her to be careful what she says as we need another family hauler and I have always wanted another wagon.
Re: Little Orange Jellybean
Terry, we've yet to meet, but you are a guy with high standards...
I need some advice on carpet. The email order kits seem to be a bit hit and miss. Now I'm looking for something for the Memorial car, in black - front to back and as close to original as possible. Do you have any ideas? Please PM me back or post on the memorial Build thread - thanks

Re: Little Orange Jellybean
Got the new exhaust system installed. I supplied a small turbo muffler and had 1 3/4" tubing installed. I decided to have it dump just behind the rear wheel for a different look. I had them make the tail pipe longer so I could trim to suite my taste. The larger exhaust seems to have added some HP and it sounds pretty throaty.
