1972 Datsun 510 2 door SR20DET $20K OBO
Re: 1972 Datsun 510 2 door SR20DET $20K OBO
You have a very nice car. You have to realize though that this is a hobby. These are not cudas or 69 camaros that seem to appreciate over time. The fella with the white vq35 motor lost his ass on his car but I don't think he had the intention of getting his money back. The upside to yours is that body is nice clean and painted. The vq car was rough but it had neat running gear. I hope that you get fair money for your car but you will have to find a true enthusiast that really wants exactly what you have. Good luck with the sale!

Here is a idea I have kicked around for awhile in my head as far as selling a custom 510 these days. Rather than selling it....try and find someone to trade you for somthing you can sell for near your asking price...like a newer car that can be financed. There are people out here with toys that are newer, and they may willing to unload it for a older custom car. Hit some of the other sites up...you never know unless you try.

Al Allen tried that with his custom "showcar" 4 door VG30 dime. He wanted over $20K for it and finally traded it for a late model 350Z. He sold the 350Z and then ended up buying the 510 back later for a good price. Now he is selling it again. I bet he still lost on the deal but maybe not as much as if he had sold the dime for cash.nickledimeme wrote:Here is a idea I have kicked around for awhile in my head as far as selling a custom 510 these days. In today's market, his car is a $10K dime and he wants $17K for it.
I think the OP car in this thread is more car then the VG car and in todays market will bring $12k - $15K to the right buyer.

I talked to Al Allen (4 door VG 510) and it turned out good for him. My wife drives this car to work and loves it, as long as she does not get another speeding ticket. I have had new offers but not enough. This is a fun clean car, and we figured we would continue to drive it until we get a decent offer. We are in the process of putting the new Coupe on the road and hope to be driving it soon. It will be hard going to a L20B over the turbo, but it's a coupe. I love Coupes. Something about passing someone with a confessed look on there face.

I'm not a super gear head but I do love the 510, Ive been to serveral datsun meets and have seen more than enough sr20 swaps to know that no matter how much money u put into it that car will never be worth 20k. It's a common swap using a 10ish year old engine model? The care does look clean which is rare but like others have said this is no mopar and 510 prices have been dropping as of late. I just don't see this very simple care going for that much.

Had a thought the other day, swap the entirety of the White Knight with the Coupe. Then i have a painted shell and alot of body work ahead of me. It is all time or money.
I also disagree about the Mopar, Chevy thing. As i drive my little Datsun around i see more old Mustangs, Mopars, and Chevy then Datsuns. Austin Martins Are not muscle cars, and sell for a hell of alot more.

And possibly proportionately more money in return if you then sold the 2-door shell. Paint and body work skills are what most 510 owners lack.the510keeper wrote:Had a thought the other day, swap the entirety of the White Knight with the Coupe.
Because when you spend a silly amount of money on a silly, trivial thing that will help you not one jot, you are demonstrating that you have a soul and a heart and that you are the sort of person who has no time for Which? magazine. – Jeremy Clarkson

Muscle Cars
The reason they command such high prices is either some old bastard from back then had one and now later in life has the money to try and buy back those youthful memories lost. Or a nerdy looser from then who was never, could never be cool, is at that time in life when he can afford to try and live that era of cars and be a chick magnet. One thing for sure the reality show called Barrett Jackson's is the biggest reason for $220,000 + 'Cudas and Camaros. The rich ripping off the rich. They don't care, it's just an investment like any other property... as long as people keep buying, the investment value goes up.
One thing's for sure. No matter how much time, money and effort you put into your Datsun you will get about 75% back out when selling. As the asking price for a lesser car is lower, you begin to get more than 75%. Below $3,000 you can break even and even come out ahead. This is because there are more people willing to pay less and do the work themselves. To pay $20,000 there are few in the market and for that it would have to be exceptional, not to the seller, that goes without saying, but to the buyer! Another way to look at it is taking $15K for a $20K project car is the price you pay for the fun of building a dream. So builders, before starting, add in this depreciation or only build if you plan to keep it. A remember, what it is, is a 510. What it isn't, is a HEMI 'Cuda that was only worth 3X a 510 new.

Still for sale, we are seeing what a new years brings, price drop $15K
Have made a few changes, New custom exhaust header, Skyline wheels, grill change
