my 1981 datsun 510

Post by datsun81 »

heres some pictures of my 1981 datsun 510 that were taken about three months ago (before i started working on it)... will have more pics up of the build soon. so far a pulled the head off and sent it in to get a valve job, it had a burnt valve while it was at the shop i spent about five hours cleaning and polishing the valve cover and getting the gaskets when I finnaly got the head back we started putting it all together only to relize that the timing chain tensioner had slipped out even though we tried so hard to keep the chain tight with a wood block we jammed in. we could not get the chain on so we decided to pull the entire front cover off we got it all off and its now ready to put back together will get all the pics of doing all that up as soon as i can.

What's your plan for the car? Did you get those early faults figured out? The same "How To Keep Your Datsun Alive" book I always go on about covers your car just as well as it does the early 510.

congrats on the hl510! He's in Wildersomething Oregon(post your location on the right or people will flame you)

the HL510/A10, aka the Datsun Violet, Stanza, won lots of rally races, incl 4 EA Safari rallies in a row with Shekhar Mehta behind the wheel... very good go fast car... ifyou want to go EFI, grab the whole head/efi unit/wirinbg and ecu off a 180-84 200sx z22e. there is also a rare but cheap dual side draft mani kicking around for the z series.

Would to be the way to go to build up a replica with the angle-iron flares. Can't imagine they're available today, but it would be cool. Imagine the tires you could get on that thing with two extra inches per wheel-well?

Hahaha....I have ot ask myself what some of these terms mean too! "Flame" means to scold someone for being dumb....or having what some think is a stupid Idea, or just getting yelled at.....litterally going down in "flames".....or getting burned in the process.....I guess. Bottom line, not good!

I was about to add some racing heritage inspiration to your thread, but chose not to pollute "your space" too badly :D
Please check this out for A510 inspiration:

I believe that the later quad square headlight, 720 front end was a North America only deal, as I've not seen photos anywhere else.

yup square headlights and ugly bumpers thanks to the National highway and transport safety Admin... they wanted to standardize headlights signals and bumpers... and a bunch of non cosmetic items... hence we go over 10 years in NA market cars with squre headligts... it took until halogens became common to lose the fugly headlight.
