Starting to get parts back on the car and found that I must have stripped my top starter bolt years ago.
I'd rather not have to pull my transmission (just got the darn thing in there) to install a Heli-Coil,
Going to find a longer bolt and see if there are some decent threads behind the stripped ones, but failing that, any home-brew methods?
Found this guy's method, looks like it could work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soOvDuwfnQA
The starter is only putting shear force on the bolt so not sure how NASA-level this repair needs to be.

I heli-coiled mine in the car. Not fun but not impossible.

Re: Stripped top starter bolt
yeah, I think I'd have to remove my oil filter to make some room. I was also trying to avoid drilling through the metal plate that is sandwiched in-between the block and the transmission.
I did some research and these guys seem to be edging in on the Heli-Coil monopoly. Time-Sert http://www.timesert.com

Re: Stripped top starter bolt
if a tap wont run thru and find enough threads to hold the bolt then i would pull the transmission- it would probably be faster than contorting to do it in the car- and yes you would have to drill the plate out larger in the car by quite a bit .

The plate hole is 7/16" the bolt is only 3/8"VelvetHammer wrote: ↑28 Jan 2019 10:53 I was also trying to avoid drilling through the metal plate that is sandwiched in-between the block and the transmission.
The holes are not blind, just drill out the threads enough so you can get a longer bolt through from the other side. Use a nut an washer on the starter. It's not rocket science.
L4W63 is on the left. Starter bolt holes are obvious.

When tapping remember the threads are M10 x 1.5, not the finer 1.25 pitch
Re: Stripped top starter bolt
I have thru-bolted them before with a nut and it works fine.
