How much does it weigh?

Post by icehouse »

Lately I've been dreaming of building a Lucky Dog racecar. There rules allow you to build basically anything. While doing some research into different engines I ran across a thread comparing a SR20DET to a VQ35 and LS of coarse  . The take home message was "go LS" which I don't want to do. I did find it interesting however they said the VQ and SR were within LBS of each other. This weekend I plan on double checking them. I borrowed a calibrated load cell from work and machined an adapter for it. I did a test measure and the Single Cam KA with all accessories, starter, flywheel, exhaust manifold and clutch weights more then the other forum said the VQ weighted. I plan on measure them all in the same configuration. Since I could run whatever trans on whatever engine if I really wanted to. Here some pictures because reading sucks.

I’m looking forward to what you find.

I suspect a Z22 or Z24 would be quite similar in weight to the single cam KA.

That's the plan. Still on my list are my Tesla drive unit, VG, L, and a CA. O and an LS if I can find someone that has one.

Jeff, so my friend and I have gotten to the point where his VQ35HR is up a running in his 280z and what a riot that motor is. He's running the trans out of the wrecked 08 350z he purchased to complete the swap but it feels so good in that platform. It makes me want to start a new project! What car would this be for?

We are going to put it in our Lucky Dog 510 we are building. Thinking about using a SR trans to save wait, I don't see the need for a 6 speed with that kinda power. Maybe an aluminum mount for a super small alternator and little things like that to save a little more weight. I didn't realize how close it was to the same weight as an SR. Also we are going to do monster flares since Lucky Dog you have to run 200 tread wear tires. Maybe do some 225's all the way around. It will be a fun build since it's going to be full racecar! :)
