Gearbox Mount for 5 Speed box help

Post by SimpleIsBest »

Apologies if this has been covered in a previous thread, I don't think I've come across one before.

I'm currently in the middle of a 5 speed swap into my 510 (standard 1.6 L-series). I'm not 100% sure what it is, but I believe it's a 71-series short box (only marking is NMCA L3 on the left side). I've run into an issue with the crossmember not lining up correctly with the car when attached to the gearbox. I measured about 125mm distance from the crossmember mounting point to the tail of the box on the new box vs 170mm distance on the old 4 speed box.

I was wondering if there was a special crossmember or mount which is unique to the 5 speed boxes, or if the best solution would be to measure everything and machine the standard crossmember?

I think it may be necessary to ID what trans you have. I have never done a 5 spd swap in a long time, but have seen quite a few. Usually the gearbox choices are either the same length or longer, not shorter. Usually the mount issue is a situation where the mount has to be modified and/or lowered to fit, not moved forward or back.

a short box 71 or 63 will fit into a automatic car(092,095,195) with the stock 4spd x member but will not fit into a 4spd car(091,094 ,194) with the stock x member. the captured nuts on the tunnel are in different locations for autos(092,095,195) vs a standard shell (091,094 ,194). when installing a short 5sp into a standard shell (091,094 ,194) a custom xmember is required. if installing a 4spd into an auto shell the stock 4spd x member can be used but will require two holes to be drilled to support the two forward bolts. regrettably this is not the case when installing a 5spd into a standard shell. also dont try to utilize the floppy 4spd trans mount with a 5spd as it will push the tail shaft up and could contribute to poor drive shaft angles.

Thanks for your responses!

I'll crawl under and get some pics of the 5 speed box again, but the only marking I could see from when it was out was the NMCA L3 marking. I've attached a picture of it if it helps?

Do you know if there are any off the shelf options for this, or would I have to get one fabricated? I think Troy Ermish sells one for 5 speed cars, would they possibly work for a short box?

Do you mean the mount that sits between the crossmember and the gearbox?

Yup emailed Troy, he said that mount should work with any trans where the mounting point is about 21 1/4" to the centre of the mount pad. Crawled underneath and confirmed, ordered one. $22 shipping to New Zealand from the US, I can't even get an ebay seller to ship me a plastic steering column surround from the US for that much....
