Am I in over my head? '70 2 door from scratch
Clean up my Subaru R180 LSD Rear Differential
As I posted earlier, the internals of the rear differential that I sourced look great, but as you can see, it is no show piece on the outside...
So I took it apart, wire wheeled it all to remove the surface rust, cleaned it up wth some grease remover and rags and then primered it, painted it, polished up the rear cover and axle caps as best I could and then reassembled it all.
I'm pretty happy with how that turned out. I need to source new gaskets and seals for it and will replace those prior to installation.

I had a bit of trouble finding these cover gasket. But did here. Ended up spending $300 on odds and ends. So beware. Lol. Subaru might have them. Nissan did not in Nanaimo. I picked up the seals from Subaru years ago.

Riley was great to deal with and shipped USPS.
My mistake just realized this is a r180. It was a r160 I got he cover gasket for. Still some rare parts on that site. And Subaru is probably your best bet.
Nice job on the cleanup.

Nicely done. I just used the the subaru ones. Much cheaper and easier to find.
If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?
Skillard Door Sills
These also arrived on Friday... I am super impressed with the quality and they came with stainless screws for mounting - a nice touch that doesn't cost them much and saves the buyer with one less thing to go source.
Hard to see on my rolling shell, but they are a little thicker than original and just feel great. I bought them direct, but some other sites do sell them...

Re: Am I in over my head? '70 2 door from scratch
I love my new door sills, they look so tidy compared to the beat up factory ones.
just go slow when tightening the screws, I could see a penchant for them, if over tightened, to start to dimple or distort the smooth plate area around the holes.
As the indexing was so very close, there was only one hole slightly offset, so make sure you run the screws down slowly ALL at the same time, to let things shift a bit.
That was my experience at any rate.

Those look great Keith. Thanks for the installation advice. I'm several months from needing it but will keep it in mind for sure.

Gilson Design SSS Dash assembled
The last of my Auto Meter gauges showed up today so I was able to spend some time this evening putting everything together.
I needed to do some adjusting to get things to fit properly and I followed the Fitment advice in this post:
viewtopic.php?t=34448
I am pretty happy with the look of the Auto Meter gauges in the dash. As I posted earlier, the Speedometer and Tach both required some pretty significant modification to fit in the dash, so on that basis, I'd recommend Speedhut over the Auto Meter if you are going to go with the Gilson SSS Dash.
I'm sure there'll be more to do once I'm ready to try fitting it in the car, but that's many months away so for now, it gets tucked away and on to the next thing - the list is long!

Nice job,it looks really good.
Re: Am I in over my head? '70 2 door from scratch
I had previously not considered the SSS dash, but there are a few nice installations here so I am beginning to be tempted.
Looks great. I do like the speedhut gauges in this as well.
I also bought a set of the Skillard door sill plates, but have not installed yet. Along with some of the other billet small pieces like the rear c-pillar interior vents and the dash knobs they should make a nice update.

Powder Coated Rear Trailing Arms
I decided to outsource the removal of the bushings... $40 cash to a local suspension guy was worth it X2. They've got the big torch and don't mind some burning rubber around their shop
I took out the seals and bearings, which wasn't easy but didn't go too badly.
I dropped them off at Island Powder Coating along with the front hood hinges and hood latch (for sand blasting only) on Wednesday and they said "about a week" - called me today for a nice Friday surprise.
Here's the before: And the after: There's something very satisfying about a finished, powder coated part!

What are your plans for bushing. The stock rubber ones can be hard to source. And poly was too harsh for me. I went back to stock. They can be removed without a torch with the right tool. But too late to lend you that. Dpracing sells sperical bearings. I assume they are harsh as well.
Re: Am I in over my head? '70 2 door from scratch
Hmm... I bought the rear lower control arm poly bushing set and the cross member bushing set from Z Car Depot when they had their black Friday sale.MikeY wrote: ↑04 Feb 2022 18:28 What are your plans for bushing. Good to know that you found them too harsh, but given that I've got them already, I suspect I will at least give them a try. They were not that expensive. I have heard that greasing poly bushings thoroughly is important, but I'm sure you know what you are doing Mike.

Re: Am I in over my head? '70 2 door from scratch
Other than the the noise and vibration that the rubber helps reduse. Another factor is flexabilty when adjusting toe and camber. Maybe Byron will jump in. But his rear crossmember adjusters don't swivel on the inboard pivot. So there is some strain on the outside bushing. Not sure if poly is the way to go for his brackets. Kelvin's penultimate
brackets took this into account. But you have to make them from scratch and Byron's are a nice part. Can't remember if datsports brackets take the inboard strain into account.

Re: Am I in over my head? '70 2 door from scratch
I have never had an issue with the rubber in my bushings that got left in there, so whatever slight strain/loading has not done anything noticeable....and that's after 38 years in service.
