1970 Datsun 510 KA24DE-T Build
Hello Realm,
Thought I would start a thread showing what I'm doing with my 510. I picked this 510 about 3 years ago, It was complete with a rebuilt KA24de with 9:1 CP Pistons with Eagle Rods, ARP Head Studs, Steel Head Gasket, Mega Squirt ECU and 550cc Injectors. When I got the car it didn't have a rear diff so I put in a open 3.9 in there and installed the rear disc brakes that came with the car, I believe they are from a Nissan Maxim. Between getting the rearend back together and finishing odds and ends to get it rolling again I masked it off and did a quick tremclad paint job with my fence sprayer that turned out pretty decent. I had it on the road finally for a few months this year working out bugs and putting a new clutch in it.
The car also came with a Ebay T3/T4 turbo kit with manifold, intercooler and piping. So this winter I'm going to install the turbo and thought I would make a Thread following my progress and hopefully get some help from the realm along the way.

Re: 1970 Datsun 510 KA24DE-T Build
Over the past few nights I got the turbo installed just to see how everything is going to fit. When I tore the header out I realized my steering box top cover was loose and I have the classic flexing steering box. I think my first tasks with be to remount the radiator with some new fans and make a steering box brace.

I am headed the same direction as you with a single cam turbo set up. Will be watching to see how this comes together for ya.
Re: 1970 Datsun 510 KA24DE-T Build
Right on! I just ordered 2 new electric fans for the radiator. I had a single 12 inch on there before. I'm going to offset 2 9" fans to help push the rad closer to the motor for more room for the inter cooler. I was both to sit behind the grill. I'm currently looking for a inter cooler that will fit and a inter cooler pipe kit.
Re: 1970 Datsun 510 KA24DE-T Build
Lately it has been more research then actual work on the car. I did manage to find a used precision turbo wastegate and a HKS BOV.
I bought some cheap electric fans from Amazon but I will be returning them. They are pretty cheap looking and through my work I can get some spal fans for a good price.
Finding a intercooler has been hard to find. I almost bought a used cxracing one but then I had to find a new radiator and the cost was just getting out of control. I have VW radiator in there currently and it just works to good to replace.
Today I finally got out in the shop and made a steering bracket brace. After taking a look around my steering box most of the bolts were loose and the box had no oil in it.... I have a feeling my steering will be a bit better after this.
I will upload some pics later from my laptop

Moving on I think my next task will be to install my brake master cylinder....I had this power booster setup but there won't be enough room now with the turbo. Can anyone help me identify what was on there? I would imagine I need to get a 280zx master to run some rear discs?

Got my new waste gate mocked up today....Seems like there is lots of room for the down pipe.

Great job on the steering box bracket, looks good.
I know its been over three years and it came with the car when you purchased it, but I wanted to ask if you know what ebay turbo kit you're using. I'm specifically interested in the manifold. Currently exploring options to turbo my KA and I was hoping to be able to use one of those cast, top mount units for the s13/s14 since they look like they might fit, but I'm not positive. Any info would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, keep up the good work, very interested to see this project come along.

Good to see your still making progress on this. My poor car has been neglected this winter.
Re: 1970 Datsun 510 KA24DE-T Build
I'm not sure specifically what our it is. The kit came with the turbo and cast iron manifold. But the turbo outlet to the intercooler is 2" but the intercooler pipe is 2.5" so I've had to buy some silicone adapters for it to work in the 510. If your just looking for the manifold I'm sure you can find a cast iron manifold cheap online.Wooger wrote:Great job on the steering box bracket, looks good.

Thanks! its alittle easier getting out in the garage with the warmer weather. I have made some progress over the past few weeks. I fabbed up my downpipe and got that fitted hopefully for the last time tonight, I have all the gaskets in there at the moment. I also got my intercooler boots and have been fitting everything to see how its all going to get in there. Hopefully soon I will finish the exhaust, I just need to connect it to the rest of the exhaust and weld in my O2 bung.16Again wrote:Good to see your still making progress on this. I set my wastegate to 7PSI to start.
