Well, I wasn't looking for another 510 project at the time, but I had an incredible deal fall into my lap and now I'm a proud owner of yet another '71 510. This particular car hasn't run since 1989 and has been mostly stored in a garage in Riverside, CA since that time... Although it probably spent sometime parked outside based on the condition of the paint.
The current goal, since I really don't know what this build will become, is to get the car running again. A quick list of items to be done are:
* Drain the fuel tank and replace all the fuel lines and filter
* New tires
* rebuild or replace the carburetor
* replace all the cooling hoses
* General cleanup of the exterior and interior

* Replaced the old tires with some cheap 175/70-13s... and got a set of dog dish hubcaps from my parts hoard...
* Removed the fuel tank and drained the old (VERY STINKY) gas.
* spent a few hours cleaning up the exterior and interior. Vacuuming & color sanding the exterior and performed a polish.
* Replaced the old and very brittle steering wheel with a clean original wheel.
* Started working on going through the engine. Removed the carb, intake, exhaust, thermostat housing and hoses.

Good to see you here, you were one of the people that I called in 2001 when I was looking for info on the mods done to the car I had just bought. I made a lot of those calls...pre internet, you know.
Yes, the body is as good as it looks. There is nothing I can really do about the surface rust (besides going the full repaint route) but otherwise there is just some very minimal rust signs in the usual places on the lower front fenders & rear dogleg.
Yes, a bunch of hard water... my oldest son was helping remove the thermostat cover and I think he was quite surprised when he removed it and found the disintegrated remains of the thermostat. Just a glob of yuck! (Or as he said... "everytime we remove something we make more work for ourselves")
Work is progressing slowly as we're also in the process of looking for a new house and having our house spit-spot clean for open houses and folks coming through... I seem to manage to find 15-20 minutes of time here or there to work on it, but hope to put in a few hours again on it this weekend.

I would throw a new head gasket on there so you are not stranded..
also remove expansion plugs and clean crude out of water jackets out so you dont get hot spots.
Slow progress this weekend on the barn find 510. (yet another open house on our place)
* Got the Weber carb mounted up to the stock manifold. The "instructions" seem pretty generic and I had to wing it when it came to putting the adapters on. Still need to replace the fuel lines in the engine compartment, but I did pick up a new fuel filter and have a new fuel pump on order.
* Since we found so much hard water residue in the thermostat housing we decided to remove the water pump too. Good call as it looked like it needed to be replaced. I'll try and drop off the radiator to get looked at this week.
* Still need to finish the carb linkage. The stock "U" bracket (that holds the linkage to the carb) seems to slide on fine, but it looks like it could be repositioned about 30 degrees. Need to make sure I can get full throttle without binding.... another thing for my list.

Progress has been slow going due to moving houses... which meant getting the old house sold and finding a new house. Lucky the place we found has over one acre, so I'll have plenty of room once I get a workshop built. In the meantime I've been slowly getting back to the barnfind now that the move is mostly done.
Need to remove the front cover as the bolt that holds the alternator bracket is broken

Oh...the "musclecar" site in Australia had some good stuff! So are you happy with the fit and seal of the repop gas filler hose? Thinking it might be a good replacement for mine as pretty cheap also.
Yes, I'm happy with the fit and seal, but let's see how it holds up to our ethanol laced fuel. My other 510 (built in Jan 1971) has the single piece rubber tube fuel filler. I'm thinking about converting it to this setup as well since I have a spare metal tube.
