6 inches of Rust

Post by RMS »

Welcome to 6 inches of rust my 69 2dr welding project. i wanted to hone my welding skills and learn more about the art of body work. so i picked the most rotted 510 i could find. Here are some rusting candidates i turned down : http://www.flickr.com/photos/62824366@N ... 603196749/

I don't have any pics of 6 inches of rust in her original condition. Jason might, i found her hiding in the tall grass at his place. She sat for something like 15 years at a storage yard, with household underlay two inches thick on the floor pan. Being a smart guy, the previous owner had stuffed all the vents with plastic bags. she was complete with a L16 4spd and a rotted out header. she had also taken a hard hit on the passenger side rear quarter. the only thing the car had was a good front end. no battery or brake problems evident on the sheet meta. i was given a wagon that had a rotted out front end but good rockers and floor pan and the butchery began.

the theme for 6inches of rust is desert storm

Robin, I recognize those poor old rotting 510's as having once belonged to Louis W - does he still own them, or have they fallen to a worse fate?

scored some seat belts from a b210 at pick-a-part. it will be nice to have some ratcheting belts. no longer will passengers complain that they cant adjust the belt. or reach the air vent.

managed to fit a larger gas tank from a 78 200sx into 6 inches of rust without too much cutting. now i need to make a shock brace that also picks up the rear of the tank and ties into the sub frame as close to the bumper brackets as i can get.

mocked up the dash. now the hard part, installing the AC securely so it doesn't get pounded out on the logging roads. any one have pics of a securely mounted AC unit? i hate the thought of all that weight hanging on the hoses and three screws through plastic.

air conditioner installation: made brackets to support the core. the idea of supporting it with zap straps was too scary. especially for the abuse I'm planing for her
