I have no doubt they will be just fine!......I hope! Not the first time I have shot myself in the foot, and arm, and...

No engine parts! Touch wood, the only thing I have broken, in all these years of playing, was a transmission. It was in my 1972 station wagon. I had just finished doing an exhaust mod, and I was rowing it through the box under HARD acceleration, when I missed a shift. The transmission just exploded!! I could not believe it. It split the case. It just about spun in my own oil. Needless to say the transmission was instant junk.

I hate air care!

Post by jason »

Well, another year, another motor and another fail. So close this time. I'm now running a L20b with a Crane Cam, Dual 38mm SU's, and a black box EI.

Driving Test

Maximum - Reading

Hydrocarbons - 409 - 104
Carbon Monoxide - 4.76 - 0.23
Oxides of Nitrogen - 4356 - 3818

Idle Test

Hydrocarbons - 1052 1169
Carbon Monoxide - 5.54 9.99

So, I guess the plan is to lean out the carbs, change the plugs, clean the air filters, retard the timing and add a little methyl hydrate into the fuel now?

Jason, what did you have your idle set at? If it was anything below 1100RPM it was too low. You should have come by my friend's shop and we could have thrown it on the gas analyzer.

Evening Andrew, hmm... I think I set the idle at 850rpm. I seem to be running too rich at idle so......

Turn up the idle and put a slight bit heavier oil in the pots.

Holy crap, this is an old thread dude! Once hijacked, and now re-hijacked. Cool!

P.S. Call me at my home number... I seem to be late with cellphone payments... :(

Well, it was time for the $23 test drive on the government dyno again. My daily driver 510 wagon this time. It's got a L20b, stock bore, W58 round port head with steel exhaust liners still in, Shadbolt/Colt 445 camshaft, stock valves, dual 38mm SU carburettors and a 2" exhaust. Only things I did this time was to slightly richen up the carbs (they where running too lean, ask Denis  ), change out to BPR5ES plugs gapped to .032, clean the K&N air filter elements and take her out on the highway for a 15 minute 4000 rpm drive. Passed!

Driving Test

Hydrocarbons Allowed 370.0 Vehicle Reading 65.00
Carbon Monoxide Allowed 4.22 Vehicle Reading Driving Test 0.86
Oxides of Nitrogen Allowed 3895 Vehicle Reading 898.00

Idle Test

Hydrocarbons Allowed 1052 Vehicle Reading 205
Carbon Monoxide Allowed 5.54 Vehicle Reading 2.70

Wow, that's a first for me on anything but a stock L16 :D !

Yah, I totally expected to fail this one and have to readjust everything. I guess those silly steel liners on that head do help reduce emissions. Now I have to deal with the oil leak problem  !

I'm really starting to get tired of air care. I took the stock carbed, L16 wagon with 5 speed in to air care on Saturday and failed on the CO at idle test only. Backed off the timing by 5 degrees, advanced the idle to 1100 rpm and leaned out the mixture and today she passed clean, for $46 ... The car runs pretty bad in this shape so I'm going to re tune her when I get back home. What a cash grab.

Glad we had that little phone call Jason - looks like it helped, glad you're through. It's late enough in the season fro you to get two years out of this test!
