Re: Let's talk 280zx performance brake pad options

Keith I had my fastest lap in our enduro car on metal to metal brakes on all 4 corners and didn't even know it. Maybe the whole weekend I was over slowing.... http://datsun510.com/uploads/monthly_2019_08/large.08142019_swamp_thing_(1).JPG.9d12366348ca83a93183493cd1c7a49b.JPG LOL, that reminds me of...

Re: Let's talk 280zx performance brake pad options

single piston zx calipers are never going to be "ideal" but you would want a pad with a lower initial heat requirement- or put some heat into the pads by dragging your left foot for a while - what master cylinder is in it? The MBC is 15/16" 280zx OEM sized. I may upgrade to Wilwood 1" with the brak...

Let's talk 280zx performance brake pad options

So I'm in the process of giving my 510 a moderate update in the driveability department. ECU, brakes, seating, and various other bits are being addressed and documented in my thread. I'm running a full 280zx setup with MBC and front and rear (newer) calipers with Porterfield R4-S pads front and rear...

January update

Progress continues on 'TAZ' my 280z. A long way to go still but I'm still confident that she'll be read for season-opening Autocross mid-May. As many of you know when building a car, the more you know/see, the more you realise you didn't know (read: order parts in advance). And even if you do a good...

Re: 280z - Datsun Restomods testbed

You have to thin out the Crossmember to fit the front sump pan? I did that on the SR install. Make sure and beef it up big time. I did and it still has a little flex using it as a jacking point. Apparently quite a bit has to get hogged out - I should see in the next week or two once the engine/tran...

280z update - Happy New Year

280z_HappyNewYear.jpg With a bit of a break over the holidays I've continued to push hard on this project. At this point she's pretty much completely gutted and each end of the shell can easily be lifted by one person. 280z_gutted.jpg I managed to get the right rear fender quarter panel mounted fai...

Re: 280z - Datsun Restomods testbed

It what was the weight of the 280Z 71B 5-speed? Hi Byron, My 280z came with an auto tranny which has long since been sent to the recycling bin. However, I do still have that near-new 71B off of that 200sx powertrain I salvaged a few years ago. I believe the bellhousing orientation is different but ...

I've got a KAE in my garage but didn't have the parts on the block. Glad you found a work-around.

Re: 280z - Datsun Restomods testbed

Wow, that is quite a gap - and your L24 weight includes the clutch & pressure plate. In your awesome weight thread ( http://www.the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=30231&hilit=weigh ) my VQ would be much closer to yours if I included the clutch & flywheel. My VQ is also drained of oil ~10lbs. You a...

280z - Addressing the curb weight

So, while the 280z is near-gutted I figured I'd take some time to weigh various bits. The 280z claimed curb weight is 2700lbs. Ideally I'd like to knock ~200lbs off for a 2500lbs setup. Starting with the heaviest bits we've got the stock L28e coming in 384lbs. Pic of complete engine, no flywheel. We...

Re: 280z - Datsun Restomods testbed

I'm almost done with my buddies 260z. We did an SR swap. Wow the kit he bought was pure junk. I had to redo all of it. A VQ would be pretty rad in one!! Lucky boys!!!!! Unbelievable the crap people sell and somehow get away with it. Yes, they are friggin' lucky kids. I would love if my dad was into...

Project 280z gets revived and a new name

Wow, close to a year since the last update. As some on this forum know, a LOT has happened in the past year and that's unfortunately taken my spare time away from really getting this wrapped up in the expected timeline. However, behind the scenes I've managed to keep slowly chipping away: the fuel t...

Re: Bashed my knuckles for the last time

Let me know what you need and if it's small enough to ship cross country. There's a few G35s in my area and I've been picking them for my VQ powered 280z. I also own a G35x that I'll be tearing down later this winter. Fritz ... If anybody is cruising what yards are left, let me know of you spy one o...

Re: Noobie's 510 project

Hi Keith, the unit itself is always 'connected' (even with no power), so initial response will always default to your stock setup prior to install. If the worm drive has slop I imagine the electric motor will quickly pickup the slack. Case in point, my stock steering box is a little sloppy and the e...
