Re: Spriso's SR20DET Bluebird Coupe Project

Wagon Rails One of the things I always wanted to look into on a 510 was adding full length frame rails from a Datsun 510 wagon. The wagon, with it's longer roof (and probably the need for being able to handle more weight and cargo) had redesigned frame rails that run the entire length of the floor-...

Re: Spriso's SR20DET Bluebird Coupe Project

Behind the Blue Door When the body was stripped, I did not send out the doors to be done-- one because I have a NOS passenger Coupe door, and two, I knew that I needed a better donor door for the driver's side. Knowing that the 2-door sedan door shell was essentially the same as the Coupe version, ...

Re: Spriso's SR20DET Bluebird Coupe Project

Bird On a Stick Now that the car is clean, the slow process of rebuilding the rusty areas of the car can begin. The first thing I wanted to get done was modifying our Datsun Roadster rotisserie with new mounts to suit the Bluebird. Of course, this took much longer than it should have, but I am very...

Yes, it appears there was an air bubble there-- thankfully that all will come off very easy. They did drill a small hole in the roof to let the air escape that I will get we...

Re: Spriso's SR20DET Bluebird Coupe Project

Back in the Nest So, the Coupe is home, and I had a good chance to inspect it last night. Overall, it is way better than expected, but has plenty of little issues that will now be addressed one at a time. The cleaning process is amazing, the insides of the trunk, interior, underside and engine comp...

A few YouTube videos of the metal stripping process, before, during, and after: Before walk around: https://youtu.be/By9BcdsT8vQ Coming out of the hot tank: https://youtu.be/M0TbK61QxH0 Before pressure washing-- this is crazy! https://youtu.be/MvzNIQWgTPs After pressure washing: https://youtu.be/3jY...

Re: Spriso's SR20DET Bluebird Coupe Project

Byron wote: Thanks for posting these shots Michael, we really appreciate it. We have had a few roadsters done by these guys, and fortunately, they understand my need to document as much as possible to share it with others. Still, it is hard to grasp seeing your baby coming out of the tank, with pain...

Re: Spriso's SR20DET Bluebird Coupe Project

The Birdbath Warning! These images not for the faint at heart! Finally some progress to report on the spa day for the Coupe. The car went into the hot tank last Thursday, and was pulled out today. This process softens up the paint, and any primer underneath-- here is what it looked like emerging fr...

Re: push rod 510s

This is an old scan of a Mexican-built 510 engine compartment data plate:

They were badged as "Datsun 1500"s

Re: Spriso's SR20DET Bluebird Coupe Project

Get the Lead Out So a few last details before heading off to the stripper... Lead-- there is lead finishing the seam in the corner of the windshield and the rear C pillar that needs to be removed-- this is now 50 years old, and is often cracked on many 510s, so I will be replacing this when the car...

Re: Spriso's SR20DET Bluebird Coupe Project

Where the Rust Hides I spent this afternoon working on the car, exposing the problem areas that I knew I would have to deal with. The rocker panels had a lot of evidence of rust from the outside, and since this car is going to be acid dipped in a few weeks, I decided to open up all the problem area...

Re: Rally 510 Photos & Videos

I suspect that is to drive some sort of rally computer like a Halda Twinmaster, but have never seen a setup like this before.
